THE WEEKLY EH?! // November 14th, 2023
The latest highlight of FIVE things happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area this week + FOUR other items of some locals' interests (also a FREE email newsletter).
Hi!
Welcome to the 14/11/23 edition of ‘THE WEEKLY EH?!’ newsletter!
Here’s Five Things
Since The 95EH Events Calendar gets updated with Kimberley AND Cranbrook area events on the regular (and it’s FREE for anybody to get their local events listed, just make a public Facebook event or visit moun.town/events for more simple details), I find it useful to do a weekly HIGHlight of FIVE things happening FOR the current week EVERY Tuesday (although I’m still thinking of switching to Mondays in the future)… and on that note:
THING #1: If the recent drop in temperatures and occasional falling of white stuff hasn’t started stirring up the Xmas feelings in you yet, this is probably going to be the week that finally flicks that switch. For starters, this Friday (November 17th) at 6pm is the Annual Platzl Light Up (“Join us for live music, hot chocolate, local shopping and deals… and maybe even a special appearance from the big guy in red himself!”):
In other words, Kimberley’s downtown centre literally flicks the Christmas lights switch to “on” this Friday — officially signalling that it is once again time to start feeling those holiday feelings, no matter what size your Grinch heart is currently at (something that MOUN.TOWN/FM can help with):
THING #2: Santa’s sleigh doesn’t stop there this week, because getting started a bit before the Kimberley Platzl gets lit up like a Christmas tree, there’s a Christmas Market happening at Centre 64 on Friday from 4:30pm to 8:30pm (and then happening again on Saturday from 10am to 5pm). “We are so excited for Christmas Market season! Join us for a shopping extravaganza while supporting local artisans and entrepreneurs. There will be live music, raffle prizes and give aways. Bring a friend, come out and enjoy our amazing local products!”
THING #3: It’s not all jingle n’ bell this week… for example, have you ever heard of a thing called “rock n’ roll”? Because, this Friday, November 17th, there is ‘A Night Of Rock n’ Roll’ happening at Key City Theatre featuring Sarah Orton (from Nelson), Maddisun (Kimberley’s own), and DJ Naytaron (Cranbrook’s own) 🤘 “Bringing an intimate/connected ‘living room’ feel (think: 70s, theatre, rock n roll house concert). Come out and spend this beautiful night with us and help to establish and grow a connected music community for all ages & demographics in Cranbrook”:
And local rockers The Honeymans and 4 Deer Run (+ other local musicians) will be playing Kimberley Centennial Center on Saturday night — “Come and join us for an amazing evening of live, local music and help us raise money for our amazing friends and band mates Dave and Julie. 100% of proceeds from ticket and alcohol sales will go to help them get through the recovery process.” — tickets available at Berley Skate although this one is now sold out (unless you know someone who knows someone):
And while we’re on the topic of local concerts that have sold out before I got my weekly newsletter out, it appears that the ‘Roots of Jazz | History of Swing & Latin Jazz in North America’ happening at Centre 64 on Saturday night has also sold out!
THING #4: The Kimberley Chamber’s ‘Countdown to Christmas’ Late Night Shopping Event (November 18th) + Shop Local campaign (which runs from November 18th - December 2nd… and includes a chance to win a $1000 Kimberley shopping spree!) is back for its 8th year — and I can confirm that this event is not sold out (because it can’t be sold out)! “From November 18 to December 2, the shop-local campaign is in full swing. It's a fantastic opportunity to win big, and the rules are simple: make a purchase at any participating business during this period. Each receipt qualifies as an entry, and there's no minimum purchase required.” — read more and see all the participating local stores over on the Chamber’s new website!
THING #5: Would you believe me if I told you that there was still some more xmas-adjacent events to share this week? Well, not only does Kimberley Art Gallery re-open on Saturday, November 18th with their ‘2023 Christmas Art Market’ opening reception (“Come join us and some wonderful (local) artists for a fabulous evening at the gallery with Mary Virgin Gin cocktails by Bohemian Spirits*, food, music, and lots of great art and crafts.”):
But the Christmas Market magic is also happening at ‘Cranbrook Auxiliary Ladies Market’ at the Eagles Hall in Cranbrook on Saturday (10am-4pm) and Sunday (11am-3pm) — “support some of Cranbrooks local businesses and grab the pancake breakfast on Sunday morning from 8am-11am to support the Starlight Campaign!”:
AND… you’ll also find Adam’s Army 2nd annual Craft market and Spaghetti Dinner happening at Wasa Community Hall this Saturday as well:
Of course, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week, so don't forget you can punch “moun.town/events” into any browser window at any time and be magically taken away to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR (it might not even be a bad idea to bookmark that page for easy revisiting)… because over at “moun.town/events” you can see the full gamut of Kimberley/Cranbrook area events happening this week and beyond (& there’s always way more going on than you think)!
+ Four Ehs
And because there’s also always more going on than just the local area events that get added to The 95EH Events Calendar, here’s 4 other things that are proving to be top of mind for at least one local area person:
EH #1: Sandwiched in between all the tinsel up in the events section, I mentioned that Sarah Orton was going to be playing at Key City Theatre on Friday — BUT — what I didn’t mention was that Sarah also took part in a new Q&A series I’m hoping to start introducing into the local area called “LOCALLY RECOMMENDED” (which is a repurposed version of my long running “HIGHLY RECOMMENDED” q&a series).
So, not only should you check out what this “local area” artist personally recommends for some of life’s top shelf categories for getting recommendations in (ie. MUSIC, TV/FILM, BOOKS, LOCAL AREA, ANYTHING):
But you’ll also get to check out some of Sarah’s music over on that blog post, including a live acoustic performance video of her latest single (and Sarah is not only playing at Key City Theatre this week… but will also be back again to sing with Moontricks on the 30th, if you missed her at Grist & Mash a couple months back, so consider this a “local area” music reconnaissance mission).
EH #2: And for those who don’t like clicking over to blog posts (despite all my enticing), or perhaps for those who clicked over to Sarah’s Q&A and didn’t notice the mention (as a lot of things got mentioned in that blog post), I should also note that since Sarah is a Kootenays-based music-maker, and since the aforementioned show on Friday includes Kimberley-based music-maker Maddisun (who also has a new single out), I went and did a “shuffle update” over on my THE KOOTENAY 95, EH playlist (which is a MOUN.TOWN/FM digital mix cd that consists of 95 tracks from 95 different East/West Kootenays artists at all times) — and you can press play on the latest edition of ‘big shiny koots’ OVER HERE:
EH #3: I forgot to mention it in last week’s newsletter, and before all the Christmas festivities of this week make me forget to mention it again (like when all the Halloween festivities distracted me from mentioning it at the start of the month), let me take eh moment to remind us all that The Epic Views and Craft Brews Tasting Passport has returned to the Kimberley/Cranbrook area — and it runs for ALL of November (read more over on Cranbrook Tourism or check the fine print on the Tourism Kimberley screenshot below to see all the participating local brew pourers)!
EH #4: Finally, last week I mentioned how I had mentioned the book ‘Voluntary Simplicity’ to someone within the context of it being Climate Action Week at BC libraries. Well, for fans of even more context, the reason I had mentioned ‘Voluntary Simplicity’ was because Kimberley Public Library had asked a bunch of people for some climate-adjacent book recommendations, and I was one of those people (and you can now see the 3 books I recommended and why on the pic below):
And if you’re interested in seeing more recommended books from more local library users… jump over to the KPL Facebook page and have a scroll through some of the others that they’ve shared last week (or jump over to their website for even more resources on climate-adjacent topics)!
And that’s that for this week.
Of course, there’s always more ‘eh?!’ to share than the 4 EHs that came to my mind while putting together this week’s newsletter, so please make sure to follow/frequent 95EH on the Facebook & Instagram & Tumblr (as I share “ehs” on the daily). And for more Jeremy/HI54-specific stuff, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook.
Because, hey… there’s a lot of stuff going on out there, eh?!
And until next week…
Please feel free to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ if you have any questions, comments, ideas and/or schemes — AND — if you think you know anybody else that might enjoy receiving this weekly newsletter about “some locals’ interests” in the highway 95/a area, please feel warmly encouraged to send them a link so they can have a think about signing up too!
And I’ll see you out on the URLs and/or IRLs… whichever comes first 🤘
🍻
