THE WEEKLY EH?! // November 7th, 2023
The latest highlight of FIVE things happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area this week + FOUR other items of some locals' interests (also a FREE email newsletter).
Hi!
Welcome to the 7/11/23 edition of ‘THE WEEKLY EH?!’ newsletter!
Here’s Five Things
Since The 95EH Events Calendar gets updated with Kimberley AND Cranbrook area events on the regular (and it’s FREE for anybody to get their local events listed, just visit moun.town/events for the simple details), I find it useful to do a weekly HIGHlight of FIVE things happening FOR the current week EVERY Tuesday (although I’m thinking of switching to Mondays in the future)… SO, without any further ado-ing:
THING #1: For fans of local hockey teams, this week is especially loaded with home ice action in both Kimberley (the Dynamiters play Golden at the Civic Centre on Tuesday + Saturday this week) and Cranbrook (where the Bucks play Penticton on Friday + Trail on Sunday, both at Western Financial Place).
THING #2: Kimberley Trails Society is holding their annual AGM up at the Kimberley Nordic Lodge on Tuesday, November 7th (7pm) — “Learn more about the work that the Kimberley Trails Society does, updates on projects that we have been working on this year, as well as our plans for next year. If you are unable to join in person there will be the opportunity to join online, the link will be made available on the KTS website leading up to the event.”
THING #3: November 4th-10th is Climate Action Week for the British Columbia Library Association (so check-in with your local to see the ways in which you can check-out how they’re participating) — BUT ALSO — don’t forget that through the BC Libraries Present program, you can take part in the live streamed event ‘Conversations on Climate - John Vaillant: Our New Fire Weather’ for FREE on Wednesday, November 8th (7pm - 9pm):
“John Vaillant’s book Fire Weather has become a de-facto guide on the new dangers posed by these fires supercharged by a warming planet. He’ll discuss his findings on the Fort McMurray fire of 2016, to help us understand what’s at stake for our cities, towns, and ecosystems.” — more details HERE!
THING #4: Kamu Sauna is offering authentic Finnish sauna experiences in wild spaces and community-based places… and they have another one coming up at Ilomaa Forest Farm in Ta Ta Creek on Thursday, November 9th (from 6:30pm to 8pm)! “Community Sauna Sessions are an incredible way to bookend your day and share in sauna culture with others. These sessions, are shared with up to 6 other folks and facilitated and guided by Juho.” — CLICK HERE FOR MORE DETAILS (as there is another community session on November 23rd).
THING #5: As The Crow Flies is “a 20 year celebration of small town balladeers” and it’s happening at Key City Theatre on Friday, November 10th:
“The Key City Theatre is delighted to present original band members: Shawna Plant, Anie Hepher, Steve Jones and Michael Hepher, joined by Clayton Parsons for an unforgettable 20 year reunion of music — Kootenay created, curated and performed for anyone whose heart belongs in a mountain town.”
Of course, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week, so don't forget you can punch “moun.town/events” into any browser window at any time and be magically taken away to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR… where you can see all the other Kimberley/Cranbrook events happening this week and beyond (because there’s always way more going on then you think)!
+ Four Ehs
And because there’s always more going on than just the local area events that get added to The 95EH Events Calendar, here’s 4 other things that are proving to be top of mind for at least one local area person:
EH #1: A couple weeks back, I mentioned the beginning of some ‘domain pains’ that I was going through trying to make 95EH.CA the main domain for this here Substack site (instead of using the free ‘.substack.com’ domain).
Welp, the issues that I mentioned previously were never able to get resolved, BECAUSE, for reasons I still don’t fully understand: you can only setup the “www.” version of your domain with Substack, and even with the domain forwarding ‘work around’ they prescribed, all previous ‘https’ urls/links for 95EH.CA out on the internet, of which there are plenty, would all become internet dead ends if clicked — and not even ‘send them to a 404 Page on my own website’ dead ends, but just blank pages on the internet that go nowhere.
Thankfully, my interactions with Substack were cordial and via patience & understanding (and a lot of back & forth emails) we were at least able to undo my custom domain change and give me a refund for the one-time fee associated with their custom domain setup. No harm, no foul.
So, now, rather than trying to mess about with any more custom domains for this newsletter site, I’ve learned my lesson and will instead just point out that the new main domain for this weekly newsletter and whatever else I post on this mountain town Substack going forward is: mountown.substack.com 👍
EH #2: Ok, I know what you’re thinking — “if only there was more to the ‘domain pains’ story”, right? — well, good news for you, because there actually is more to my ‘domain pains’ story!
Mainly, Tumblr had changed the process for how to use a custom domain with their service since I first had 95EH.CA connected, so by disconnecting my domain to try and use on Substack (which we now know was a fail), I wasn’t able to just go back on Godaddy and change my DNS settings to reconnect 95EH.CA to my Tumblr. Because now, in order to have a custom domain connected to your Tumblr, you have to get your domain from Tumblr. And if your domain is already registered with a different company, like mine is, you would have to transfer your domain over to Tumblr in order to use that domain (a process that can take 5-7 days, which can be worrisome to look into if you also have your email address connected to your domain) — EXCEPT — it turns out that Tumblr can’t even do .CA domains… so it’s not even possible for me to transfer my 95EH.CA domain back over to Tumblr!
Thankfully (after temporarily connecting 95EH.CA to the same Squarespace website that my MOUN.TOWN domain goes to while I tried to sort things out), I was able to explain the situation to all parties and get some genuinely helpful help from both the Tumblr and Squarespace help desks, and now… 95EH.CA is back to being connected to the same Tumblr-powered online collection of Some Locals’ Interests (which I will continue to play around with like a digital pin-board-zine that allows for quick entry points to discover a bit of some of what goes on around the highway 95/a area, eh ok?) 👍
EH #3: Up in the events section I mentioned that it was Climate Action Week at BC libraries, and in conversation with our local library about books on that topic last week, I brought up ‘Voluntary Simplicity’ by Duane Elgin (originally released in 1981, but I have the 2009 revised edition).
And maybe because I also had just lent my copy out to friends for unrelated/related reasons, I found myself doing some random googling on “voluntary simplicity” this weekend — which led me to an intelligently written article on the topic, which led me to realize that there was not only more intelligently written articles on that website, but there was also other interconnected interesting websites/projects that carry on the topic, all from the same clearly intelligent & grounded person, a Dr. Samuel Alexander from down under (who has also written a bunch of interesting sounding ebooks on the topic — all available as ‘pay what you can, even if that’s $0’).
But, for me, the kicker to this ‘the good kind’ of online-rabbit-hole exploration I went down was that I eventually found a free 8-part lecture series from Dr. Samuel Alexander called “Ecological Civilisation: Beyond Consumerism and the Growth Economy” on Youtube and it seems like a pretty great resource for anyone interested in listening to a well-researched human talking candidly about what more of us moving “Toward a Way of Life That is Outwardly Simple, Inwardly Rich” might look like in the real world that we’re living in right now (ie. collective crises realities & all):
And for any fellow garden folks, even if you don’t fancy some of the heavier topics tackled in this lecture series, you might find that the BioGas stuff talked about in the 2nd video is quite interesting… especially for any of you compost connoisseurs:
EH #4: To close things out, I just want to mention that I recently announced, via the endless void that is social media, that I’m going to be taking an indefinite pause on the self-directed work that goes into updating all of my weekly mix cd playlists (ie. moun.town/95) and monthly mix cd playlists (ie. moun.town/420) and just my general Spotify playlist updating in general (ie. moun.town/fm).
I touch on some of the reasons in this twitter thread (which I re-shared on Facebook & Instagram if you prefer), plus I might also put together a blog post on the broader topic (ie. maybe a bit of a follow-up to the blahg I wrote about deciding to stop dealing with music submissions back in the Spring of 2022), SO, for now, just know that all of my public Spotify playlists (and all of their accompanying mix cd blog posts) are going to be going a bit static.
And to clarify: I mean ‘static’ as in I won’t be updating any of my Spotify playlists on the regular anymore (at least until 2024, maybe full-stop), but I don’t mean ‘static’ as in the sound of a radio signal that’s not coming thru anymore… because you can continue to feel free to use & explore MOUN.TOWN/FM while I try to figure out if there’s a version of this idea that is worth carrying forward into any future calendar years.
And that’s that for this week.
Of course, there’s always more ‘eh?!’ to share than the 4 EHs that came to my mind while putting together this week’s newsletter, so please make sure to follow/frequent 95EH on the Facebook & Instagram & Tumblr (as I share many things of some locals’ interests on the daily).
And for more Jeremy/HI54-specific stuff, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook.
Because, hey… there’s a lot of stuff going on out there, eh?!
And until next week…
Please feel free to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ if you have any questions, comments, ideas and/or schemes — AND — if you think you know anybody else that might enjoy receiving this weekly newsletter about “some locals’ interests” in the highway 95/a area, please feel warmly encouraged to send them a link so they can have a think about signing up too!
And I’ll see you out on the URLs and/or IRLs… whichever comes first 🤘
🍻
