THE WEEKLY EH?! // September 12th, 2023
This week's highlight of FIVE things happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area + FOUR other items of some locals' interests.
Hi!
Welcome to the 12/9/23 edition of ‘THE WEEKLY EH?!’ newsletter!
Here’s Five Things
Since The 95EH Events Calendar gets updated with Kimberley AND Cranbrook area events on the regular (and it’s FREE for anybody to get their local events listed, just visit moun.town/events for the simple details), I like to do a weekly HIGHlight of FIVE things happening FOR the current week every Tuesday — as sometimes it’s nice to get a reminder of what’s going on before ‘the week ahead’ becomes another week in the rearview… and on that note:
• THING #1: As I mentioned the other week (via a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED q&a), Vancouver’s ‘modern music’ legend Stephen McBean is playing in Cranbrook this Wednesday (September 13th) with his excellent Pink Mountaintops outfit at Key City Theatre (check for tickets here) — AND — if you’d like a sample of the music-making quality that will be going down at Key City this upcoming ‘hump day’ night, besides checking out Pink Mountaintops on Spotify or Bandcamp for yourself (or wherever you listen to music these days), here’s an old Youtube video I recently found of my fave Pink Mountaintops song being performed acoustically:
• THING #2: Huckleberry Books in Cranbrook is hosting an author event this Thursday, September 14th with “Kelowna-based cyclist Meaghan Hackinen for an evening of Bicycle Touring Adventures”. Meaghan will be reading from her book ‘South Away: The Pacific Coast on Two Wheels’ and the word on the digital streets (aka: on Facebook) is that there are only a handful of spots remaining for this free event (and you can reserve a spot on the Huckleberry Books website event page)!
• THING #3: There’s a Nelson musician takeover happening at Grist & Mash this Thursday with THREE music-making travellers hitting the Pine Box stage in one night: Sarah Orton, Alissa Arnason, and Mr.Dr.Brotherman! No cover, but reservations are recommended for this one — SO — besides clicking the linked artist names in the previous sentence to open up your own investigations in a new tab, I’ll drop a track from each artist below so you can do some audio research too:
THING #4: The inaugural Columbia Valley Ribfest is taking place in Cranbrook at Western Financial Place from Friday September 15th to Sunday September 17th — “Experience 3 full days of live entertainment, refreshing drinks and world class BBQ! There will be something for everyone at Columbia Valley Ribfest, including the Show & Shine Invitational, Porky’s Stage, Wild West Saloon, Washer Toss Tournament and the Rocky Mountain Rib Competition!” — and don’t forget to take a drink every time you hear somebody do the ‘baby back rib’ bit (even if it’s yourself) 🙃
THING #5: This Saturday, September 16th (from 10am - 1pm) it’s the 10th annual Wildsight Kimberley Cranbrook Harvest Party down at the Kimberley Community Garden on Rotary Drive — “this event is a great chance to enjoy the garden, partake in a plethora of activities, and, most importantly, connect with others while enjoying the turning of the season” — in other words: a family-friendly community day party, harvest-style!
Of course, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week, so don't forget you can always punch -> moun.town/events <- into any browser window at any time and be magically taken to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR to see all the other events happening this week and beyond (and you can always reach out via email to 'hey@95eh.ca' if you have something of local area interest/intrigue that you think would be a good fit for a HWY 95EH signal boost) 👍
+ Four Ehs
And because there’s always more going on than just the local area events that get added to The 95EH Events Calendar, here’s 4 other things that are proving to be top of mind for at least one local area person (ie. myself):
EH #1: My ‘Summer of Cat’ has continued beyond this year’s random cat-sitting gigs (shoutout Maple and Bandit for lending me their #CatsOfKimberley hashtag influence), as a neighbourly cabin-painting gig out at Premier Lake has crossed my path with a cat with no name (so we call him “Primo”) who just so happened to have also agreed to a similar social media internship in exchange for coffee break cuddles (but since Primo is an hour drive away from Kimberley, I’ve also dusted off an old hashtag called #MountownCats — which I invite anyone else with a mountain town cat to use on their Instagram posts that feature mountown cats… otherwise I’ll just keep using it to archive all of my feline collaborators, don’t think I won’t 😺).
EH #2: This is the 7th ‘THE WEEKLY EH?!’ newsletter that I’ve sent out using Substack, which has got me trying to explore how other people are using Substack to get me thinking about how I could start using more of what Substack offers for what I continue to try and do with all my interconnected 95EH.CA + HI54.BLOG / MOUN.TOWN ideas — BUT — since me ‘better figuring out how I might be able to better use Substack for what I’m doing with 95EH.CA + etc’ is a thought process still very much in processing mode, I figured I would instead just start sharing some of the Substacks that I’ve been personally checking out & deriving personal value from in the meantime. Especially as more & more creators start attempting to take their social media audiences away from restrictive/exploitive platforms like Twitter & Meta (which has been happening A LOT ever since Musk got into the social media game with fellow billionaire Zucks), I’ve been finding myself clicking over to Substack more & more. So let me first give a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED shoutout to @Caitlin’s Newsletter, which is one of my favourite no-punches-pulled delivery of some of what’s really going on in the world beyond the parroted news headlines out there pulling their same old tricks. Caitlin writes more than I have the headspace to take on everyday (but that’s also because I often already agree with the tweeted versions & don’t want to dive further down any international rabbit holes for my own sanity/focus) — BUT — every time I do read a Caitlin Johnstone article in full, like with this recent ‘In A World Ruled By Propaganda, A Sane Worldview Will Necessarily Be A Fringe Worldview’ post (which also comes with a ‘listen to the article’ option, like all the other articles, which is nice), I find Caitlin’s words always resonate on a deeper than the usual level. For a good example of the kind of resonating I’m talking about, here’s a screenshot from Caitlin’s ‘About’ page describing the project (as I also think that our biggest hurdle to get over is to first collectively realize what’s really been going on AND what could actually be going on instead AND THEN… getting to work on what we can work on right now, individually + collectively):
EH #3: I’ll aim to spread my Substack recommendations out as I continue to explore what other people are doing on Substack — BUT — while we’re on the topic of Substack writers that I first discovered on Twitter (back when Twitter was a more functional dumpster fire for keeping up with trusted information sources), and because I also resonated with a paragraph that talks about remembering to refocus ones ‘things that are wrong with the world’ awareness back onto what we can actually take action on in our own communities/lives, let me also shout out the @New Means Substack and this great ‘The Myth of Scarcity’ article (but I’ll screenshot that ‘resonating paragraph’ below for those that don’t have time to click over, as I know there are some fellow KEGG.CA community gardeners on this here mailing list and I think sometimes it’s nice to be reminded that there are many ways to be a more radical human being/doing… even just by growing food together ✊😎).
EH #4: Finally, besides the weekly updated 95-tracks/artists playlist that I refresh with a new human-made digital mix cd every Sun/Monday, at the changing of EVERY month I also update my 420 ALLDAY Spotify playlist with a new 54-tracks/artists digital mix cd (while also removing 54 tracks/artists from the bottom of the playlist to keep things at a nice total of ‘420 tracks from 420 different artists’… which is something that’ll play for 24hrs straight without ever repeating a track/artist). So if that sounds like something that might be your ear’s cup of tea, you should jump over to the accompanying blog post for listen links and more (where you’ll also find the ongoing available-on-Bandcamp archive on Buy Music Club, which you can use to listen without a Spotify account + find links to buy directly from the artists).
Of course, there’s always more ‘eh?!’ to share than the 4 Ehs that came to my mind while putting together this week’s newsletter, so please make sure to follow 95EH on the Facebook & Instagram & Tumblr (especially if you ever frequent the highway 95/a/eh area IRL where these URL signals are getting relayed from). And for more Jeremy/HI54-specific stuff, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook.
Because, hey… there’s a lot of stuff going on out there, eh?!
Until next week…
Please feel free to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ if you have any questions, comments, ideas and/or schemes — and if you think you know anybody else that might enjoy receiving this weekly newsletter about “some locals’ interests” in the highway 95/a/eh area, please feel warmly encouraged to send them a link so they can have a think about signing up too!
