THE WEEKLY EH?! // February 5th, 2024
The latest highlight of FIVE things happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area this week + FOUR other items of some locals' interests from out 'round highway 95, eh.
Hi!
Welcome to the 5/2/24 edition of ‘THE WEEKLY EH?!’ newsletter!
Here’s Five Things
Since The 95EH Events Calendar gets updated with Kimberley AND Cranbrook area events on the regular (and it’s FREE for anybody to get their local events listed, just visit moun.town/events for the simple details), I find it helpful to do a weekly HIGHlight of FIVE things happening FOR the current week EVERY Monday (well, maybe with a month long break thrown in every now & again when I’m out of the country and mostly offline) — and not only is it a Monday again, but I am also back on my trusty old iMac in Kimberley BC once again, so:
THING #1: February is ‘Love Your Library Month’ at Cranbrook Public Library and all month long they will be sharing stories of just how & why so many local patrons love their local library… so make sure you’re following CPL on Facebook and Instagram to check out all the different reasons locals love the library (and maybe you could even hit up your own social media and share some of your reasons for loving our libraries… I’m sure they’d love to hear them / see them being said out loud)!
And over at Kimberley Public Library, February is science month, with each week seeing an exploration into the fascinating world of science with experiments & hands on learning (including a Science Fair celebrating The International Day of Women and girls in science on February 11th)!
And for even more science behind why our local libraries are so lovable, I highly recommend you check out both the Cranbrook Public Library’s always updating events page as well as the Kimberley Public Library’s always updating events page, and then have a poke around each of their respective websites (and then make sure you are following them both on their social medias), as there is a never-ending amount of amazingness that both our libraries make available in our communities, EVERY day/week/month, and I don’t think they receive as much love/praise as they should for all they do ❤️
THING #2: The High Bar Gang will be bringing their old time bluegrass sound to the Key City Theatre stage on Thursday, February 8th (with local area openers Wild Honey) — so have a listen to the Bandcamp embed below if you fancy hearing what the people/instruments in the picture below sound like in action (and then click here to check for tickets):
And for some other live music options: Velvet Vixen is playing at Grist & Mash on Thursday, Dave Prinn will be on the Stonefire stage Friday + Saturday night, and Queen City Burlesque will be putting on a Rock n' Roll Valentine's Burlesque Show on Saturday, February 10th at Key City Theatre called ‘Hardcore Love’.
THING #3: There’s some back-to-back hockey home games happening in both Kimberley AND Cranbrook this Friday + Saturday, so whether you want to cheer on the Dynamiters against the Grand Forks Border Bruins on February 9th or against the Columbia Valley Rockies on February 10th, OR whether you want to cheer on the Bucks against the West Kelowna Warriors on February 9th or against the Merritt Centennials on February 10th, there’s no shortage of hometown hockey to holler about in person this week 🏒
THING #4: Speaking of things happening in both towns, the International Fly Fishing Film Festival is hitting Cranbrook on February 9th at Key City Theatre and then it will be up in Kimberley on February 10th at Centre 64 — so check the trailer below to prep your stoke and then check your physical location for which day/venue you’d like to attend this year:
THING #5: It’s Super Bowl Sunday this weekend, so if you fancy seeing how many times Taylor Swift is shown/talked about in between the time when the ball is not in play (fun fact: the average football game sees the ball in action less than 20 minutes during the entire 3-4 hour broadcast!), now is the time to start wondering where you’d like to watch that all play out live.
According to what’s been posted as events online so far, I’ve been able to find Super Bowl parties at the Stemwinder and at Sully’s for Kimberley, Marysville Pub for Marysville, as well as a Super Bowl watch party at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #24 in Cranbrook, BUT, I feel like anywhere that usually has sports up on their TVs is probably a pretty safe bet that they will also be showing the Super Bowl this Sunday (regardless if they’ve posted anywhere about things online, as not everybody does that around here).
Of course, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week, so don't forget you can punch “moun.town/events” into any browser window at any time and be magically taken away to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR… where you can always easily find the full gamut of Kimberley/Cranbrook area events happening this week & beyond (because there’s always way more going on than I can mention here, with new events added on the regular)!
+ Four Ehs
And because there’s also way more going on than just the local area events that get added to The 95EH Events Calendar, here’s 4 other things that are proving to be top of mind for at least one local area person:
EH #1: Before our recent ‘Christmas/European Vacation’, I had never flown in/out of the Cranbrook airport before (we used to always use Calgary as our starting point and drive to/from my brother’s), so my only experience with cancelled CBK flights was the frequent Kimberley Corkboard “our West Jet flight got cancelled… anyone driving from Calgary/Vancouver?” posts that one often sees throughout the year.
Well, now I can join all the others who’ve had to deal with a “there’s been a change to your scheduled flight” message from West Jet as not only was our outgoing trip from Cranbrook to Calgary delayed 4 hours at the start of our trip (luckily we had a 7 hour layover in Calgary before our flight to London, otherwise our trip would have been f*cked right from the beginning, as we had multiple connections booked to get to the south of Denmark) — BUT — on our way home, after starting our travels almost 20 hours earlier from Svendborg, we arrived at Calgary airport on Jan 30th to be greeted with a text/email saying that our flight home to Cranbrook at 8pm had been cancelled for “unscheduled maintenance”. Not delayed. Not postponed. Just completely cancelled.
And to make matters worse, our already inconvenient make-up flight from Calgary-to-Vancouver-to-Cranbrook that West Jet scheduled for the next day got cancelled later that same night too. Except our next day flights didn’t just get cancelled entirely, instead we got an automated text/email saying that we’d still be flying from Calgary to Vancouver on Jan 31st and only our Jan 31st Vancouver-to-Cranbrook flight had been cancelled, so now we would be expected to stay in Vancouver until February 2nd for our next flight, when we would then have to fly BACK TO CALGARY to then finally fly to Cranbrook (not getting home until after midnight on February 3rd).
Which, of course, is a ridiculous “solution” to be offered, so we then had to get on hold until we could reach a West Jest agent via phone to cancel all that nonsense and put us on the next available Calgary-to-Cranbrook flight (which wouldn’t be until February 1st at 8pm, which meant we then had to go back to the airport on the morning of Jan 31st to sort out our missing checked bag AND THEN go wait in line at the departure check-in counter so that a West Jet agent could give us another hotel voucher, as the person on the phone could only sort out our plane ticket).
In the end, after originally being booked to arrive home on January 30th at 9pm, we made it back to Kimberley on February 1st at 9pm — and our 2 nights at an airport hotel were covered by West Jet + we got some airport food vouchers that luckily could also be used at the hotel we were put up at (and, as was recommended by both hotel staff and the West Jet employees who helped sort out our 2nd night of accommodation, we submitted a ‘Flight Delay & Cancellation Claim’ when we got home, so we’ll find out in the next 30 days if us being stranded in Calgary for 48 hours due to “unscheduled maintenance” qualifies us for some compensation).
All in all, ‘twas not the smoothest end to the trip, and definitely doesn’t fill one with confidence when booking a next trip with Cranbrook airport as the start/end point (as all this malarkey happened without any of the more common ‘winter weather’ or ‘wildfire smoke’ reasons that one already knows to worry about), BUT, I guess sometimes you gotta just learn to turn lemons into lemonade (as there usually isn’t too much else you can do about being handed a big ol’ bag full of life lemons).
EH #2: As for the overall trip (which started back on December 7th), it was lovely to get to spend a bunch of time in Denmark and Spain, and we didn’t really run into any other problems while away (although we had pretty bad weather for all of our drives to and from the Danish airport — from hurricane like winter storms to can’t see in front of you fog, but, ironically, it wasn’t until our very last flight back to Cranbrook that we actually ran into any airport bad luck… and the weather was great on those days 🙃).
Since the last newsletter I sent out was before the Spanish leg of our trip, I will just add that you can see some pics over on my personal Instagram or on my HI54 Facebook page if interested…
+ I will just say that I’m really going to miss the ‘no tipping’ culture of Spain (ie. unless you go for a proper meal at a sit down restaurant, you just pay for the cost of your beer/coffee/etc rather than worrying about the PST & GST & expected 15%-20% that gets added on top of almost every consumer interaction over here) and I’m really going to miss how EVERY TIME you order a beer in the south of Spain it comes with free/included tapas (aka: small appetizers). Also, I love how siestas are such an accepted part of the way of life over there that you basically have to factor in that most small businesses are going to be closed during the middle part of the day, so you might as well just take it easy too (it’s like the opposite of ‘hustle culture’… and I very much respect that level of ambition).
EH #3: As for my plans for 95EH now that I am back home (and the general blogging/online stuff that I do), I think I am going to use the month of February as a buffer month to slowly get back into the swing of things while also trying to figure out which things makes sense to keep swinging away at. For now though, I plan to keep putting out this weekly newsletter and updating The 95EH Events Calendar (so please feel warmly encouraged to sign-up to receive this newsletter via email and/or tell others to do the same + please reach out if you might have any interest in supporting the work that goes into all of this stuff through some ‘Mutually Beneficial Employment’ or any other forms of collaboration).
EH #4: Finally… how about you? How have your last 2 months been? What’s your 2024 looking like? What’s been making you go ‘eh?!’ lately? What local area stuff have I missed out on / been missing out on while away & mostly offline? Would love to hear from you (yes, even you).
And that’ll be that from me for this week!
Of course, there’s always more ‘eh?!’ to share than the 4 EHs that came to my mind while putting together this week’s newsletter, so please make sure to follow/frequent 95EH on the Facebook & Instagram & Tumblr (as I share “ehs” on the daily). And for more Jeremy/HI54-specific stuff, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook.
Because, hey… there’s a lot of stuff going on out there, eh?!
And until next week…
Please feel free to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ if you have any questions, comments, ideas and/or schemes — AND — if you think you know anybody else that might enjoy receiving this weekly newsletter about “some locals’ interests” in the highway 95/a area, please feel warmly encouraged to send them a link so they can have a think about signing up too!
And I’ll see you out on the URLs and/or IRLs… whichever comes first 🤘
🍻
