THE WEEKLY EH?! // December 26th, 2023
The latest highlight of FIVE things happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area this week + FOUR other items of some locals' interests (also a FREE email newsletter).
Hi!
Welcome to the 26/12/23 edition of ‘THE WEEKLY EH?!’ newsletter!
Here’s Five Things
Since The 95EH Events Calendar gets updated with Kimberley AND Cranbrook area events on the regular (and it’s FREE for anybody to get their local events listed, just visit moun.town/events for the simple details), I find it helpful to do a weekly HIGHlight of FIVE things happening FOR the current week EVERY Monday… except when Christmas Day falls on a Monday, so here’s a special Boxing Day catch-up for what’s going on during this last week of the year 2023:
THING #1: The Kootenay Orienteering Club is hosting a Turkey Run-Off Showshoe event at Lois Creek Trails on Wednesday, December 27th (although, recent weather conditions have come with an updated recommendation from Friends of Lois Creek Trails that “spiked shoes or some type of strap on traction add will be required for sure and snowshoes that have good ‘claws’ might be helpful particularly with hills”). CLICK HERE to jump over to their website for all the event details (which includes hot dogs) + online registration:
And you might as well keep your Wednesday icy outdoor adventures going with an ice skating party up at the Rockin' Skating Rink located at the Kimberley Alpine Resort Plaza (“an afternoon of music, hot chocolate, skating, games and more” from 1pm - 6pm)!
THING #2: The family fun outdoor activities keep on keeping on with a new Story Ski Adventure partnership between the Kimberley Public Library and the Kimberley Nordic Club called ‘Spaghetti with the Yeti’ (which kicks off on December 29th, but can be enjoyed ALL winter long). “The ‘Spaghetti with the Yeti’ story unfolds on a 2 km out-and-back loop and follows intrepid hero George across 12 storyboards as he sets out to find the elusive Yeti, with just a map, a woolly hat and a tin of spaghetti in his backpack. As children ski along the trail, they'll follow the characters in this funny, rhyming story of friendship and courage, written by Adam and Charlotte Guillan and illustrated by Lee Wildish.”
THING #3: Local MC Strange 2ruth will be grabbing the mic and sharing the stage with RaytheNihilist and friends (some of those friends being local acts: Catalyst Loa, 12th Housɘ & ItzJustBenzo) at the Studio & Stage Door in Cranbrook on Friday December 29th. CLICK HERE for more event details:
And then check out Strange 2truth’s latest single/s in a few years over on the Spotify or give a listen to Golden Ticket on the Youtube visualizer below (while you contemplate getting yourself a ticket for this local hip hop show):
THING #4: Before we get to the New Year’s Eve parties, let’s first talk about the traditional New Year’s Eve torchlight skiing, which gets started on December 31st from 6:00 - 9:00pm at the Kimberley Nordic Club with “a unique torch light ski experience around the 3km Centennial loop — admission is by donation and there will be baked treats available in the lodge + this year there will also be a guided ski around the loop at 7:00pm with one of our certified ski instructors.”
And then the torch gets passed over to Kimberley Alpine Resort for their annual torchlight parade (8:50pm) and fireworks display (9pm) at the ski hill’s Family Party in the Plaza (and that’s “plaza” not “platzl”, fyi). And for those not interested in taking part in the nordic torchlight skiing, keep in mind that night skiing is happening up at KAR from 5:30pm - 8:15pm on December 31st + that Family Party in the Plaza kicks off at 7pm (“DJ, dance party, BBQ, beer gardens, face painting, pinata smash and more”) with a fire-spinner at 8pm!
THING #5: Looking for something to do on New Year’s Eve that’ll take you into New Year’s Day? Well, lucky for you, there’s quite a few options (although I can’t guarantee that there’s still tickets available for everything I’m about to list) — let’s start off with something for those who want to stay up on the ski hill: Brass Monkey will be ringing in the new year up at Stemwinder Bar & Grill (“Ticket includes – Deluxe pizza buffet at 11pm (Salads, delicious finger foods, assorted pizzas and dessert) a glass of bubbly, and party favours at midnight”):
Fernie’s Shred Kelly (with special guests Half Spent) will be ringing in the New Year in Cranbrook at Encore Brewing (“there will be great music, terrible bowling, and the craziest party of the year!”):
Local folk n’ rollers Alderbash will be taking care of the Marysville merry-makers with a New Year’s Party at the Marysville Pub (“Your ticket gets you two rounds of served hors d’oeuvres, your choice of any pint of beer or our signature New Year’s Eve cocktail, party, favours, champagne for midnight and a charcuterie spread for a midnight snack.”):
The Hollers got you covered over at the Kimberley Elks Lodge (which is turning 100 years old):
Local east coaster Lennan Delaney will be getting the foot stomping going at a New Year’s Eve East Coast Kitchen Party at Fenwick & Baker:
Fresh of his birthday celebrations on Christmas, Jesus Christ Superstar will be having a special New Year’s Eve Gala at Key City Theatre:
Oracle Jones soundtracks the New Years celebrations at Stonefire:
And if all of that wasn’t enough for you, Jurassic Mike will be performing at Casino of the Rockies’ New Year’s event, Band of Brothers will be on the stage at the Royal Canadian Legion in Cranbrook, and In Pursuit + The Rockets & special guests will be ringing in 2024 over at Charcoal Restaurant:
Of course, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week (even when I list way more than 5 things above), so don't forget you can punch “moun.town/events” into any browser window at any time and be magically taken away to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR… where you can find the full gamut of Kimberley/Cranbrook area events happening this week & beyond, all in one place (because there’s always way more going on than I can mention here, with new events added on the regular)!
+ Four Ehs
And because there’s also always way more going on than just the local area events that get added to The 95EH Events Calendar, here’s 4 other things that are proving to be top of mind for at least one local area person:
EH #1: Over here in Denmark, it took a mini-hurricane named Pia on the 21st to finally blow away the blanket of grey that had been hanging above us everyday since arriving on the 8th (I swear, we literally did not see the sun for almost 2 weeks), giving us some much missed blue skies for our search for the perfect Danish Christmas tree on the 22nd (a process that was like trying to find a pine needle in a haystack given all the specific attributes that needed to be met, but we eventually got there in the end… and, not to brag, but it was I who eventually found the tree that everyone agreed was “tommel op fantastisk” 👍):
EH #2: And for a bit of a change of pace, the Danes like to celebrate Christmas on the evening of the 24th (rather than the morning of the 25th), so, after filling our bellies with food and booze and more food (including a game where you have to keep eating a porridge like dessert until someone finds the one whole almond and wins more sweets as a prize… a game we actually had to continue playing the next day because nobody could eat anymore), the candles were lit on the tree (and the buckets of safety water were placed to the side) and we then proceeded to circle the tree singing Danish Christmas carols (with me butchering pronunciation every other line), until eventually we hit the “Nu Er Det Jul Igen’ song that keeps increasing in speed until everyone starts running around the house and then… what’s left of the candles gets blown out and we move on to the presents. Glædelig Jul indeed!
EH #3: Which leaves Christmas Day to be a more casual day of continuing to eat and drink and watch Christmas telly and play board/card games and snack on sweets, which, to be honest, also seems to be what’s on the schedule for Boxing Day too. And no complaints here from me, as I’m a big fan of the Danish tradition of putting out an assortment of topping options (from the usual fixings to what’s leftover from the meal prior) and then eating about 10 different open face rye bread sandwich flavours in one sitting (washed down with a Tuborg or some schnapps that has been in the freezer for years)… so here’s hoping your holidays are going down just as hygge!
EH #4: But it’s not all good vibes in the world this holiday season (as I’m sure everyone knows, even those who tend to push away the parts of our collective reality that they find too messy to face until it’s something that directly effects themselves personally), SO, on the heels of the supposed birthday celebrations of Jesus Christ (who would have been born under the rubble that is now Palestine if that virgin birth took place today), I invite you to give 10 minutes of your day/week to listen to this ‘alternative christmas message’ from George Osborne (which is still very much relevant to listen to even as another Christmas has come & gone, because the bombing & bedlam around Bethlehem continues to carry on with very little pushback from a Christian-centric western worldview that seems more caught up with worshipping the idea of Jesus Christ instead of actually practicing what the guy actually preached).
And that’ll be that from me for this week (and just a reminder that I am only going to be doing one newsletter for the entire month of January, as I’ll be aiming to spend even more time offline once our ‘Christmas Vacation + European Vacation’ moves to Spain — so make sure you get your Kimberley/Cranbrook January events posted online before the 3rd of January if you’d like to see them added to The 95EH Events Calendar and/or considered for ‘The Monthly Eh?!’ that I’ll be putting together next week).
Of course, there’s always more ‘eh?!’ to share than the 4 EHs that came to my mind while putting together this week’s newsletter, so please make sure to follow/frequent 95EH on the Facebook & Instagram & Tumblr (as I share “ehs” on the daily). And for more Jeremy/HI54-specific stuff, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook.
Because, hey… there’s a lot of stuff going on out there, eh?!
And until next week…
Please feel free to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ if you have any questions, comments, ideas and/or schemes — AND — if you think you know anybody else that might enjoy receiving this weekly newsletter about “some locals’ interests” in the highway 95/a area, please feel warmly encouraged to send them a link so they can have a think about signing up & supporting too!
And I’ll see you out on the URLs and/or IRLs… whichever comes first 🤘
🍻
