THE WEEKLY EH?! // April 1st, 2024
The latest highlight of FIVE things happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area this week + FOUR other items of some locals' interests from out 'round highway 95, eh.
Hi!
Welcome to the 1/4/24 edition of ‘THE WEEKLY EH?!’ newsletter!
Here’s Five Things
Since The 95EH Events Calendar gets updated with Kimberley AND Cranbrook area events on the regular (and it’s FREE for anybody to get their local events listed, visit moun.town/events for the simple details), I find it worthwhile to do a weekly HIGHlight of FIVE things happening FOR the current week EVERY Monday, and, well… it’s Monday again, eh (but see further below in regards to an announcement about that):
THING #1: Indie Art Night has fired back up again at The Shed, and this Thursday, April 4th the featured local area artist will be ‘biologist by day, photographer by night’ Lisa Kinnear from Bound for Mountain Photography.
THING #2: Kimberley Library will be hosting a viewing of the documentary ‘Growing On Two Wheels’ this Friday at 3 pm and then there will be a Q&A session after the film with Vanessa and her family — “We are a family who love biking and traveling around the world. More than 40,000 km on bikes in the last 17 years (Canada, South America, Brazil, New Zealand, Taiwan, Poland). We love to go slow and live with the people on our way. It’s why we spent two winters at Kimberley, between the bike season. We loved it! In 2022, we did Calgary to Vancouver on bikes, and in 2023, we did a loop of 4500 km in BC.” — catch a teaser of the doc below:
THING #3: It’s Teacher Appreciation Night at Huckleberry Books this Friday (starting at 7 pm) and all educators are invited to stop by for an evening of book sales, treats AND surprises (so tell the teachers in your life)!
THING #4: This Saturday, from 11 am-4 pm at the Eagles Hall in Cranbrook, is a nerd-positive happening called ‘Geek Fest’ — “Featuring all sorts of vendors selling all sorts of "geek" stuff! There will be toys, comics, Collectables, Games, Costumes, and more geek stuff! Do you know someone in your family who likes to dress up as a superhero and go out in public? This is the fest for them!”
THING #5: And up on the ski hill this weekend, it’s the annual end-of-season hullabaloo called ‘Spring Splash’ — featuring live music (Shred Kelly on Saturday and locals The Honeymans on Sunday), beer gardens, splash pond (Saturday), dummy downhill (Sunday), kids activities (all weekend) AND more!
Of course, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week, so don't forget you can punch “moun.town/events” into any browser window at any time and be magically taken away to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR — where you can find the full gamut of Kimberley/Cranbrook area events happening this week & beyond (because there’s always way more going on than I can mention here, with new events added on the regular… but see further below in regards to an announcement about that)!
+ Four Ehs
And because there’s always more going on than just the local area events that get added to The 95EH Events Calendar, here are 4 other things that are proving to be top of mind for at least one local area person:
EH #1: I’m not going to include any EHs in this week’s newsletter.
EH #2: April Fools! (as you can see, I’m already on my second EH, eh?)
EH #3: But, on a more serious & no foolin’ note, after much internal humming & hawing, I think I’ve come to the conclusion that April 2024 is going to be the last month that I continue updating The 95EH Events Calendar. I just don’t think I have the right brand of steam left in my tank to make the ongoing commitment to running an independent community events calendar make sense in regards to what it costs in my time/effort to keep going and what my time/effort has shown to bring back in support/earnings over the years (even if trying to re-launch something like ‘Mutually Beneficial Employment’).
Especially when I factor in my thoughts & feelings about living amongst the realities of colonial/imperial capitalism (which don’t seem to be going anywhere), and how those thoughts & feelings can often complicate how others think & feel about supporting what I’ve tried to do with 95EH over the years, I think it might be time to pull the plug and re-evaluate where/how I focus my limited blahg’n energy (and since stumbling into a work-from-home gig that pays me money for every hour I spend working on it, I’ve been really feeling the futility of all the time I’ve spent working on things where there is never anyone to send an invoice to at the end of the day/week/month, not to mention the unmotivating state of social media these days). And having recently freed up some time & headspace by pulling the plug on my non-earning music blog (which was not an easy decision after putting more than a decade into it), it feels like the next step is for me to also plan a similar exit strategy from continuing to try and make ‘whatever 95EH is’ happen locally (not sure if the project/idea hit a wall or a ceiling, but it feels like it's been stuck spinning its wheels in place for quite a while now).
I’ll probably try and write about this in more detail later, but I just wanted to get the gist of it out there now, as it’s been a main thing on my mind for months and I’m hoping by officially announcing the upcoming ending I can start having some different things occupying my mind more.
EH #4: Why wait until the end of April to stop? Well, in order to run The 95EH Events Calendar the way that I do (ie. pulling all the Kimberley AND Cranbrook area events into one handy & functional local area calendar), I use a service that has a subscription cost. And the last time I re-fired up The 95EH Events Calendar (around this time last year), I decided to pay for a full year to save a little bit on the monthly price tag, and that yearly subscription comes to an end on April 28th, 2024. So, I figured I might as well get my money’s worth and continue updating The 95EH Events Calendar until the end of April and then… I will leave the local event sharing/communicating to the professionals (ie. those with the local funding/support to do so).
As for this weekly newsletter, I’ll see how the rest of this month plays out in regards to whether I keep doing some kind of version of it after I stop updating The 95EH Events Calendar (ie. in theory I could do something similar without also running my own events calendar), but I have a strong suspicion that I’m only going to become less of a ‘man about town’ than I already wasn’t (ie. I’ve also been feeling a strong pull to spend as little time on social media as possible lately, which is another driving factor in the decision to unplug from ongoing 95EH upkeep).
Like the guy who gets celebrated every Spring with chocolate eggs for rising from the dead once said: “You have to be in this world, but you don’t have to be of this world” — and I feel that’s a still relevant contradiction for modern living that might be best explored while being more logged off than currently 🙃
And that’ll be that from me for this week!
Of course, there’s always more ‘eh?!’ to share than the 4 EHs that came to my mind while putting together this week’s newsletter, so please make sure to follow/frequent 95EH on the Facebook & Instagram & Tumblr (as I share “ehs” on the daily, although, as noted above, that’s been a lot less frequently lately and likely will become even more less frequently). And for more Jeremy/HI54-specific stuff, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook.
Because, hey… there’s a lot of stuff going on out there, eh?!
And until next week…
Please feel free to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ if you have any questions, comments, ideas and/or schemes — AND — if you think you know anybody else that might enjoy receiving this weekly newsletter about “some locals’ interests” in the highway 95/a area, please feel warmly encouraged to send them a link so they can have a think about signing up too (it’s free to sign-up & receive the newsletter, but there’s a paid version available that offers all the same things of the free version if anybody fancies supporting the work that goes into putting all this stuff together)!
And I’ll see you out on the URLs and/or IRLs… whichever comes first 🤘
🍻
