THE WEEKLY EH?! // December 18th, 2023
The latest highlight of FIVE things happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area this week + FOUR other items of some locals' interests (also a FREE email newsletter).
Hi!
Welcome to the 18/12/23 edition of ‘THE WEEKLY EH?!’ newsletter!
Here’s Five Things
Since The 95EH Events Calendar gets updated with Kimberley AND Cranbrook area events on the regular (and it’s FREE for anybody to get their local events listed, just visit moun.town/events for the simple details), I find it helpful to do a weekly HIGHlight of FIVE things happening FOR the current week EVERY Monday… and, believe it or not, it’s Monday again:
THING #1: On Tuesday, December 19th (from 10am - 2pm) Dolly and Pete Andrew will be coming to the Yaqakiǂ ʔit̓qawxaxamki (Place where People Gather) at the College of the Rockies campus in Cranbrook to share how to bead and make ornament drums (“all are welcome and it's free of charge”)!
THING #2: Speaking of COTR-related events, a 3-part public lecture series called ‘COTR Museia’ (aka: “a seasonal celebration of learning created by the faculty in Arts and Sciences at College of the Rockies held in partnership with the Cranbrook Public Library”) will be kicking off this Thursday with a lecture entitled ‘Black Holes – the Deepest Darkness and the Overpowering Light’ by Dr. Ben Tippett, Astronomy and Physics Instructor in the Department of Math and Sciences at College of the Rockies:
THING #3: Local live music kicks off this Thursday with The D'linquint jazz trio hitting the pine box stage at Grist & Mash at 6:30pm (“What a way to celebrate Winter Solstice in our cozy space with great music!”):
Fernie duo Naturalist come to town to light-up the dance floor at the Marysville Pub Christmas Party on Friday, December 22nd (“They each bring a unique style to the turntables and their live sets are made up of various styles of feel good house and disco bangers that come together to create a sound they call ‘Space Disco.’”):
And then James Neve will be playing Stonefire on Friday + Saturday night (8pm - 11pm), and Maddisun will be providing the après skis soundtrack at the Stemwinder on Saturday from 3pm-6pm, with Garry Jacklin taking over the après skis duties on Sunday, December 24th (3pm-6pm):
THING #4: And for some live music cut from a different cloth, Jingles for Jackets (a Christmas sing-along event to raise warm clothing for the community) returns to the Platzl gazebo for its 3rd year on Friday, December 22nd at 5:30pm — “The carols will be led by a lovely choir with Arne Sahlen on piano and Summit Snacks will be providing hot chocolate by donation to the Kimberley Helping Hand Food Bank” + “The donation site opens on Monday, December 18th, and closes on Friday, the 22nd. Drop your gently used, warm clothes to the Kootenay Mortgages office at 550 Mark Street. We're collecting all kinds of warm clothes (boots, gloves, sweaters, jackets etc!) for all ages too.”
THING #5: And as you’ve probably already clocked, it’s getting very close to that time of the year when Santa starts climbing down chimneys, which means there’s still a few more chances to catch Kris Kringle out & about in the neighbourhood before his busiest day of the year. For example, up on the ski hill, Santa will be coming to KAR for a ski around on December 23rd (“Santa can be found out on the slopes making some turns and around the base area through out the day so be sure to wave a hello… and he just may have a little treat for you!”) and then on December 24th ol’ Saint Nick & his elves will be partaking in Santa’s Ballon Parade!
And don’t forget about the annual “Santa cruising around on the back of a fire truck” tour that goes all across Kimberley on December 24th — check this FB post for the neighbourhood schedule and/or try to track Santa’s route yourself over at santafd.app 🎅👍
Of course, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week, so don't forget you can punch “moun.town/events” into any browser window at any time and be magically taken away to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR… where you can find the full gamut of Kimberley/Cranbrook area events happening this week & beyond, all in one place (because there’s always way more going on than I can mention here, with new events added on the regular)!
+ Four Ehs
And because there’s also always way more going on than just the local area events that get added to The 95EH Events Calendar, here’s 4 other things that are proving to be top of mind for at least one local area person:
EH #1: Looking ahead at the upcoming calendar, both at when the next couple Mondays fall (ie. on Christmas Day followed by on New Years Day) + my physical whereabouts until February (which will be a combination of mostly in Denmark, with a 2-week south of Spain trip in the middle, and maybe a few days in the UK before the long journey back to Kimberley at the end of January), I’m thinking that next week will likely be my last weekly ‘The Weekly Eh?!’ newsletter for not only this year (as 2023 will soon be over), but also until at least February 2024 (as I’m thinking of doing a one-off ‘The Monthly Eh?!’ at the start of January 2024 instead of trying to keep a weekly newsletter going amongst all the travelling & offline living that I’ll be doing during the first of month of the next new year).
So, if you are a local area person that is putting on local area events in January 2024 and you’d like to see those events in The 95EH Events Calendar, please try to get your events posted as a public Facebook event (or by using the ‘Submit Event’ button over at moun.town/events) BEFORE January 3rd. That way I should have enough time & internet access to get things added to the calendar + in consideration for what gets shouted out in the January ‘Monthly Eh?!’ newsletter before NOT packing my laptop for our upcoming Almuñécar trip.
EH #2: As mentioned in a previous newsletter, I continue to find the ongoing genocide going on in Palestine this Christmas season—along with the way that so many westerners are seemingly more put off by the faux pas of bringing up that there’s a genocide going on in front of our collective eyes (and that maybe we should do or say something/anything) than they are by the actual genocide taking place itself—to be quite deflating (especially when thinking about how many other “uncomfortable” things also need to be talked about openly/publicly if we’re ever going to change the course our society is on). Reminds me of that Martin Luther King quote about moderates being more devoted to order than justice:
Which is quite depressing when thinking about how long ago he said it and how much the same problem of moderates inaction in the face of overt injustice still rings true all these years laters — it’s just now the same cultural observations are getting made by people named ‘@eyeballslicer’ instead of by a Dr. King (although, to be fair, maybe it’s Dr Eyeballslicer for all I know):
EH #3: Which makes me worried about the upcoming US election of 2024 (and whenever our next Canadian federal election will fall), as our right-of-centre liberals/democrats/moderates masquerading as “the left” sure seem to be setting the table for the usual pendulum swing to the even-further-right — BUT — on a lighter note (or at least with a lighter delivery), here’s a fun short video that puts US-politics-as-usual on blast (and one that works pretty good for Canadian politics too):
EH #4: I’ll close with some more audio/visual content, as I recently finished watching Boots Riley’s new series I’m A Virgo, which, like his movie ‘Sorry, To Bother You’, is another surreal comedy about American capitalism that may be a pinch too weird for some people to make it all the way to the show’s creatively expressed breakdowns of capitalism, so I will share those clips here, as they’re worth a watch (the first one is an official clip from Prime video, which is where you can watch the entire series — ps the speech starts about 1 minute in):
And the next 2 clips are ‘unofficial’ clips from the show that someone uploaded to Youtube, which splits up the final synopsis of capitalism that appears near the show’s climax (so there’s a chance that these next 2 clips won’t stay online as long as the above one, so give a watch when you can if you don’t plan on checking out the full 7 episode series):
And, finally… merry Christmas you filthy animals 🙃
Ok, that’ll be that from me for this week.
Of course, there’s always more ‘eh?!’ to share than the 4 EHs that came to my mind while putting together this week’s newsletter, so please make sure to follow/frequent 95EH on the Facebook & Instagram & Tumblr (as I share “ehs” on the daily). And for more Jeremy/HI54-specific stuff, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook.
Because, hey… there’s a lot of stuff going on out there, eh?!
And until next week…
Please feel free to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ if you have any questions, comments, ideas and/or schemes — AND — if you think you know anybody else that might enjoy receiving this weekly newsletter about “some locals’ interests” in the highway 95/a area, please feel warmly encouraged to send them a link so they can have a think about signing up too!
And I’ll see you out on the URLs and/or IRLs… whichever comes first 🤘
🍻
