THE WEEKLY EH?! // November 27th, 2023
The latest highlight of FIVE things happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area this week + FOUR other items of some locals' interests (also a FREE email newsletter).
Hi!
Welcome to the 27/11/23 edition of ‘THE WEEKLY EH?!’ newsletter!
Here’s Five Things
Since The 95EH Events Calendar gets updated with Kimberley AND Cranbrook area events on the regular (and it’s FREE for anybody to get their local events listed, just visit moun.town/events for the simple details), I find it helpful to do a weekly HIGHlight of FIVE things happening FOR the current week EVERY Monday… and on that note:
THING #1: This Thursday (November 30th) brings out of town musicians to both Kimberley and Cranbrook, with Charles Benjamin coming from Fernie to play the Pine Box Stage at Grist & Mash (so have a listen to the opening track off Charles’ 2022 EP ‘Broken Strings’ below for a pre-show sample):
And then Nelson’s Moontricks will also be in our neck of the woods this Thursday night, except they’ll be playing the Key City Theatre stage in Cranbrook (so have a listen to their 2022 album ‘Currents’ on the Bandcamp player below as you try to figure out which mountown you’ll want to find yourself in this Thursday night — I’ll just add that Sarah Orton will be returning to the neighbourhood to sing with Moontricks, so, if you want to add to the dilemma, read the LOCALLY RECOMMENDED Q&A Sarah recently did where she recommends the meat pies at… Grist & Mash in Kimberley 🙃):
THING #2: But the live music doesn’t stop there this week, it just gets a bit more jingle-y with a Christmas Community Concert with Take Four & the Kimberley Community Choir at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church on both Friday evening and Saturday afternoon (tickets available at Kimberley Friends Art Collective) — “Local jazz favourites ‘Take Four’ are very pleased to present a wonderful night and afternoon of Christmas classic’s that will put everyone in the holiday spirit. It will be a collaboration of Randy Marchi’s ‘Take Four’, and ‘the Kimberley Community Choir’ directed by Marta Zeegers with Tim Plait on the piano. Marchi also hinted that there will be some surprise musical guests.”
THING #3: The jingle bells keep jingling with a bunch of Christmas/Winter markets happening this weekend, including Winter Market Kimberley at Kimberley Francophone School in Meadowbrook this Saturday (10am - 3pm) + a Spinner's and Weaver's Winter Craft Sale at Centre 64 on Saturday as well (10am - 4pm):
Bohemian Spirits is also getting into the market spirit with their Boho Winter Craft Market happening this Saturday from 11am - 4pm (“Come check out local talent and get some unique gifts for family and friends!”) — AND THEN — the Kimberley Farmers’ Market is holding their ‘Winter Edition’ market this Saturday (3pm - 7pm) AND this Sunday (12pm - 4pm) at Resker Hall in Marysville (“Fresh food from local farmers and producers, crafts from local artisans, delicious treats, and inclusive experiences for the whole family are going to be served up for one weekend only — now with an indoor space to keep warm!”).
THING #4: Looking to do something seasonal that’s a bit off the usual path? Well, the folks at The Spiral Path might have just the thing for you, as a certain somebody/something called Krampus will be in their shop this Sunday (12pm-4pm) for family photos for anyone interested in exploring a different winter solstice myth (while also raising money for charity — while also raising eyebrows from those who are more familiar with seeing a mythological character named “santa” 🎅 this time of year instead of a horned mythological character that triggers some to think of the slightly differently spelled… “satan” 😈).
THING #5: If the thought of Krampus being in town stirs up any ‘fight or flight’ emotions in you, perhaps the best solution is to find your ugliest Xmas sweater and channel that energy into joining the Food Bank Ugly Sweater 5K Run/Walk (because Krampus can’t catch you if you keep moving… especially if you’re moving in a crowd dressed in similarly festive sweaters). And even if you don’t feel the need to run from Krampus this Sunday, the Ugly Sweater Run/Walk is a great way to help support the Kimberley Helping Hands Foodbank (“entry is by donation of either non-perishable food or by cash or cheque & donations of over $20 will receive a tax receipt”) + there will also be free hot dog and hot drinks served by foodbank volunteers.
Of course, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week, so don't forget you can punch “moun.town/events” into any browser window at any time and be magically taken away to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR (I recommend bookmarking that page for easy revisiting) — BECAUSE — over at “moun.town/events” you can always find the full gamut of Kimberley/Cranbrook area events happening this week & beyond (as there’s always way more going on than I can mention, with new events added on the regular)!
+ Four Ehs
And because there’s also always way more going on than just the local area events that get added to The 95EH Events Calendar, here’s 4 other things that are proving to be top of mind for at least one local area person:
EH #1: While we’re on the topic of upcoming Christmas/Winter markets, and because I keep seeing people post in the local FB groups about “how do I find out about all the Christmas/Winter markets going on?”, I figured I would share what I commented on one of those posts last week, and that is: If you search The 95EH Events Calendar at moun.town/events (ie. there is a search bar where you can enter words like “market”) you can filter all the events in the calendar down to just the ‘markets’ (or whatever other word you want to search/filter the calendar for):
Plus, if/when more public Facebook events get created for any other Kimberley/Cranbrook area markets, those markets will also get added to the overall list, making moun.town/events a pretty good ‘one stop shop’ to find out about what’s going on — which seems like a good time to mention again that the process for getting a local area event added to The 95EH Events Calendar is as simple as just creating a public Facebook event (or by using the free ‘Submit Event’ button that’s located right on the calendar):
EH #2: Speaking of upcoming local markets, last week the ladies behind the upcoming Public Goods Market - Holiday Edition (happening December 9th at the Kimberley Conference Centre) took part in a LOCAL INTRODUCTIONS Q&A over on the MOUN.TOWN blog… and you can read more about what they had to say OVER HERE:
EH #3: And while we’re on the topic of getting information out about local area events, I’d like to take a moment to mention that even though I wasn’t able to fit the Cranbrook Public Library’s amazing Boxing Week Sale into last week’s newsletter, thankfully, if you read the fine print of their brilliantly cheeky campaign, it was not a limited time offer:
In fact, because libraries are awesome every day/week, their Black Friday offerings are also available every day/week. And, no, this is not just an ongoing Cranbrook Public Library deal, it’s an ongoing Kimberley Public Library deal too (or wherever you library) — all you need is a library card for your local library to take advantage of all the unlimited time offerings (which seems like a good time for me to mention again that ‘HI! HERE'S FIVE REASONS FOR WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER GETTING A FREE LOCAL LIBRARY CARD’ blog post that I put together back in October).
EH #4: Finally, to tie the bow on all this interconnected local event chatter, I just want to mention that I recently updated how the MONTHLY & QUARTERLY 'Mutually Beneficial Employment' supporters of the work that goes into running The 95EH Events Calendar get displayed over on moun.town/events:
And, even though I also posted this on the socials, I’d like to publicly give an extra helping of thanks to the hearty handful of local businesses/organizations that graciously agreed to take a chance on the soft-launch of this non-traditional approach to supporting the work that goes into running a non-traditional local 'bizness' idea like 95EH.CA and MOUN.TOWN during this last half of 2023 — SO — THANK YOU Kimberley Public Library 🙌 and THANK YOU Kimberley & District Chamber of Commerce 🙌 and THANK YOU Mountain Grass Gallery & Bistro 🙌 and THANK YOU The Hourglass 🙌 and THANK YOU Huckleberry Books 🙌
And because I hit the word count limit on my Instagram post, I also want to give a special shout out to the hearty handful of humans who have chosen to help support the work that goes into doing this newsletter by either signing up for the MONTHLY or YEARLY subscriptions on Substack (paid subscriptions that do not come with anything extra than what the free subscribers get, so their payments are strictly about directly supporting the work for the sake of directly supporting the work, something that is immensely appreciated by me and the tank where I keep my motivation). Also, shoutout to the person who recently found their way to the page on my website where it is possible to donate money in support of the work that goes into the site… who then donated $10 to the site because they appreciate how what I do helps shine a light on ‘all the rad stuff going on in the local area’.
As someone who has foolishly gone done the path of 'just do the work and maybe the support will follow' (aka: diy blogging), it has really meant a lot to me and my bank account to see some tangible support for this project come about in its 7th year of attempting to keep existing in the highway 95/a area, eh.
And on that topic of 95EH continuing to exist, I'll close things out by mentioning that I’m going to be going into 'mostly out of office' mode for the months of December and January (exchanging Kris Kringle & Krampus for nisse with a trip to Denmark) — BUT — while I’m physically away from my desktop computer I do plan on continuing to update The 95EH Events Calendar with Kimberley AND Cranbrook area events, while also continuing to put together this FREE weekly newsletter, while also continuing to share daily "EHs" on the local socials & over on 95EH.CA, while also working in the background on how to improve/evolve this mountown project further for a re-launch of ‘MBE’ in February 2024… all while also attempting to get as hygge as possible with the Danish in-laws (*results may vary*).
So here’s my recently refreshed A NORDIC BREEZE mix cd playlist to set the soundtrack for where my headspace will soon be for the next couple months (in case anyone wants to join me via the art of headphone travelling):
And that’ll be that for this week.
Of course, there’s always more ‘eh?!’ to share than the 4 EHs that came to my mind while putting together this week’s newsletter, so please make sure to follow/frequent 95EH on the Facebook & Instagram & Tumblr (as I share “ehs” on the daily). And for more Jeremy/HI54-specific stuff, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook.
Because, hey… there’s a lot of stuff going on out there, eh?!
And until next week…
Please feel free to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ if you have any questions, comments, ideas and/or schemes — AND — if you think you know anybody else that might enjoy receiving this weekly newsletter about “some locals’ interests” in the highway 95/a area, please feel warmly encouraged to send them a link so they can have a think about signing up too!
And I’ll see you out on the URLs and/or IRLs… whichever comes first 🤘
🍻
