THE WEEKLY EH?! // February 26th, 2024
The latest highlight of FIVE things happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area this week + FOUR other items of some locals' interests from out 'round highway 95, eh.
Hi!
Welcome to the 26/2/24 edition of ‘THE WEEKLY EH?!’ newsletter!
Here’s Five Things
Since The 95EH Events Calendar gets updated with Kimberley AND Cranbrook area events on the regular (and it’s FREE for anybody to get their local events listed, just visit moun.town/events for the simple details), I find it helpful to do a weekly HIGHlight of FIVE things happening FOR the current week EVERY Monday, and, well… it’s Monday again, eh:
THING #1: If you’re looking for a good reminder as to why it’s a good idea to buy concert tickets for bigger-name artists passing through our neck of the woods sooner rather than later, both the upcoming Alan Doyle (he of Great Big Sea fame) concert at Key City Theatre AND the upcoming Allison Russell concert at Centre 64 (both concerts happening this Tuesday evening) are totally SOLD OUT. So, unless you already have a ticket in your pocket (or know someone who can no longer make it), your next best option is to use one of these Youtube embeds to give yourself a taste of what you’ll be missing out on this week…
…and then remember to remind yourself that whenever artists with recognizable names come through town, those tickets tend to go quite fast (which is a good thing for our off-the-beaten-path communities, as it helps ensure that more artists with recognizable names continue to come through our towns… even if all us procrastinators always end up missing out).
THING #2: This Wednesday evening is film night over at Key City Theatre with Rockies Film Festival & Series: Flora & Son — “Single mom Flora (Eve Hewson) is at a loss about what to do with her rebellious teenage son, Max (Orén Kinlan). Encouraged by the police to find Max a hobby, Flora tries to occupy him with a beat-up acoustic guitar. With the help of a washed-up LA musician (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Flora and Max discover the transformative power of music.” Tickets are $15, with proceeds from the film going to support local community projects. Check the trailer below:
THING #3: There’s a Nature Themed Trivia Night from EK Invasives happening at Bohemian Spirits this Wednesday night (7pm - 10pm). “Test your nature knowledge with our trivia questions centered around biodiversity for Invasive Species Awareness Week! AND Bohemian Spirits Distillery is generously donating an exciting prize for the winning team!”
THING #4: FIS World Criterium Masters will be hitting the Kimberley ski hill from March 1st to March 7th — follow Canadian Alpine Masters Group for updates/info and check the video below for a little taste of what to expect (ie. this is the track from earlier in the year that the Masters will be racing on):
THING #5: It’s Paper Bag Princess Day 2024 at Huckleberry Books this Saturday, March 2nd (11am - 1pm) — “There will be crafts and activities and treats. You can decorate your own crown or help us design a GIANT dragon to put up in our kids' nook. Kids of all ages are welcome!”
Of course, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week, so don't forget you can punch “moun.town/events” into any browser window at any time and be magically taken away to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR… where you can always easily find the full gamut of Kimberley/Cranbrook area events happening this week & beyond (because there’s always way more going on than I can mention here, with new events added on the regular)!
+ Four Ehs
And because there’s always more going on than just the local area events that get added to The 95EH Events Calendar, here are 4 other things that are proving to be top of mind for at least one local area person:
EH #1: It’s a leap year this year, which means February is going to last 24hrs longer than usual — OR — as Neil deGrasse Tyson explains, the neediest month in the calendar is given an extra day to make up for the fact that the earth takes about 365 and 1/4 days to do a full rotation around the sun (except not quite, so every 100 years we have to make up for the overcorrection, except not quite, so every 400 years we have to make up for that overcorrection… or something like that). Calendars, eh?
EH #2: Which means that everyone looking forward to start taking a bite out of Cranbrook Burger Month is going to have to wait a whole extra day before things kick off on Friday, March 1st this year. For the uninitiated, this great local event gets chefs at 20 Cranbrook restaurants to create unique off-menu burgers, different for each location, to serve for the entire month of March… with $5 from every burger sold going to the Canadian Mental Health Association of the Kootenays! Check the poster below for all the participating restaurants and check out cbkburger.ca for all the juicy details 🍔
EH #3: After much internal humming & hawing, I've decided it was time to officially pull the plug and pack in all of my "music blogging" 🙁 — a decision that has been a long time in the making (as I’ve successfully run an unsuccessful music blog for over a decade) and you can READ MORE about that decision OVER HERE.
I’m thinking that most people reading this newsletter won’t really notice the change too much, as most of my music blogging stuff never really caught on much with the locals (and I tended to interact more with artists and audiences outside of the Kootenays), but if you were someone who was checking out stuff like MOUN.TOWN/FM, unfortunately, that operation will no longer be operating/updating (as I’m canceling my Spotify subscription and getting out of the music streaming pyramid scheme in general). But, hopefully, my cutting ties with the music blogging world/work will open up some time and headspace to better focus on trying to see if there’s something worth pursuing more in regards to being a more locally-focused blogger/blahg — and I have my eye on spending March doing some website refurbishing & re-thinking while prepping a relaunch of my ‘Mutually Beneficial Employment’ idea for the start of April 2024.
EH #4: A major factor in deciding to stop taking on all the work that comes with keeping a music blog going is I figured it was time to acknowledge that it just wasn’t logical to keep spending so much time on something that not only does very little for bringing in food & rent money — BUT — also takes time/energy away from being able to do things that could bring in some food & rent money. And, in what is surely no coincidence, instead of dealing with PR emails and updating mix cd playlists as a music blog for no pay this month, I recently started a work-from-home gig where I am helping train AI chat bots for an hourly rate. I think I’m technically not allowed to talk about the work I am doing with these AI chat bots, so let me just say that it is crazy how fast and smart they are and I really hope us humans don’t get to a point where we can’t see the difference between consuming content created by a fellow human or just consuming content created by algorithms (because these AI robots handle creative writing prompts and technical instructions insanely well/fast and I can’t imagine how many blog posts or newsletters they’re already publishing out there on the internets).
And, on that note, I best get back to my new job that’s paying me to train things that’ll likely make being an independent blogger even more irrelevant and financially unattainable than it already is 🙃
And that’ll be that from me for this week!
Of course, there’s always more ‘eh?!’ to share than the 4 EHs that came to my mind while putting together this week’s newsletter, so please make sure to follow/frequent 95EH on the Facebook & Instagram & Tumblr (as I share “ehs” on the daily). And for more Jeremy/HI54-specific stuff, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook.
Because, hey… there’s a lot of stuff going on out there, eh?!
And until next week…
Please feel free to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ if you have any questions, comments, ideas and/or schemes — AND — if you think you know anybody else that might enjoy receiving this weekly newsletter about “some locals’ interests” in the highway 95/a area, please feel warmly encouraged to send them a link so they can have a think about signing up too!
And I’ll see you out on the URLs and/or IRLs… whichever comes first 🤘
🍻
