THE WEEKLY EH?! // February 19th, 2024
The latest highlight of FIVE things happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area this week + FOUR other items of some locals' interests from out 'round highway 95, eh.
Hi!
Welcome to the 19/2/24 edition of ‘THE WEEKLY EH?!’ newsletter!
Here’s Five Things
Since The 95EH Events Calendar gets updated with Kimberley AND Cranbrook area events on the regular (and it’s FREE for anybody to get their local events listed, just visit moun.town/events for the simple details), I find it helpful to do a weekly HIGHlight of FIVE things happening FOR the current week EVERY Monday, and, well… it’s Monday again, eh:
THING #1: Everyone’s favourite Canadian orphan (aka: Anne of Green Gables) comes to the Key City Theatre stage this Thursday, February 22nd (7:30pm) for a special ballet performance of the classic tale from the fictional town of Avonlea, Prince Edward Island (“Anne of Green Gables – The Ballet® is a playful, colourful and evocative production that will transport audiences to early 20th century Atlantic Canada”). Check the video below for a taster and then CLICK HERE for more info!
THING #2: It’s Star Wars Ski Night up at Kimberley Alpine Resort this Friday, February 23rd (5:30pm - 8:30pm), so “whether you’re a Jedi, Sith, Wookiee, or Droid, come dressed as your favourite character and immerse yourself in an evening of night skiing filled with lightsabers, droids, and epic battles. At the base area you can get your photo with Kylo Ren, become a Jedi, facepainting, costume contest, photo booth & much more!”
THING #3: Top Crop is hosting a gardening Q&A this Saturday, February 24th (10am - 1pm) — “Bring a lawn chair as we will be set up in the green house ready to answer any and all questions and sharing what worked and what hasn't worked for us. Every person will get a FREE liquid seed starter fertilizer.” If interested, make sure to sign-up at Top Crop Garden Centre as space will be limited for this informative green thumb event!
THING #4: Community Connections Society of Southeast BC is hosting the Cranbrook walk for this year’s The Coldest Night of the Year on Saturday, February 24th (a “winterrific family-friendly walk to raise money for local charities, serving people experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness”) and everyone/anyone is invited to join the cause as walkers and team captains to help raise funds for those in need — register and find out more info about this great event OVER HERE!
THING #5: Ridetheory has teamed up with Black Dog Cycle & Ski to offer their first ever fat biking clinic in Kimberley this Sunday, February 25th (10am - 1pm). “This clinic is specifically designed for strong beginner and intermediate mountain bikers who are looking to explore the world of fat biking — the day promises to be full of new skills while having a blast”! CLICK HERE to find more details and to register for this event (as availability is limited).
Of course, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week, so don't forget you can punch “moun.town/events” into any browser window at any time and be magically taken away to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR… where you can always easily find the full gamut of Kimberley/Cranbrook area events happening this week & beyond (because there’s always way more going on than I can mention here, with new events added on the regular)!
+ Four Ehs
And because there’s always more going on than just the local area events that get added to The 95EH Events Calendar, here’s 4 other things that are proving to be top of mind for at least one local area person:
EH #1: This is the last week to get your votes in for the Kimberley Chamber’s annual Business Excellence awards (voting closes on February 23rd at midnight to be more exact), so go cast your ballot OVER HERE and then go think about grabbing some tickets to the Oscar-inspired dinner and awards ceremony + local bizness mingling soiree that will be held at Centre 64 on March 22nd!
EH #2: Speaking of The Oscars, the actual Oscars will be held on March 10th this year, and I recently watched Oppenheimer (currently streaming on Amazon Prime), the film that a lot of people are touting as the likely Best Picture & Best Director winner, and… it was a pretty great film. I always sigh a bit when I see a film has a 3-hour runtime, but there’s enough great performances and amazing editing in this one to really make the story move along at a pace that doesn’t make you feel like it is literally 3 hours long.
Going into the film, I was only familiar with the fact the Oppenheimer was the guy behind America’s nuclear bomb (and had a different idea of what the movie was going to be about), but the overall story had a lot to do with the struggle of creatives with ‘left-wing minded morals’ finding a way to pursue their visions & integrity in a world run by power hungry right-wing war hawks (which is a story that still feels very relevant because not much has changed, there’s just way more nuclear bombs now). Quality film, would recommend (and, so far, I’d say it’s the best of the 2023 movies that I’ve watched, although I’ve only seen 3 of the 10 films nominated for Best Picture this year so far).
EH #3: And while we’re talking about movies from 2023, having recently got a chance to watch the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot before our Paramount+ trial ended —(and in regards to last newsletter’s mention of Paramount+, the tv show The Curse that I mentioned didn’t really land the interesting planes I was hoping it would, in fact, you could say that Nathan’s character didn’t land at all in the series final #notquiteaspoiler)— I am very surprised to see that ‘Mutant Mayhem’ was not nominated for Best Animated Feature for this year’s Oscars, as not only did it hit way more humour and nostalgic and needle drop points than I was expecting it to, but the art style really was quite amazing to look at. Highly recommend checking it out (especially if you are also in the elder millennial age range)!
EH #4: Speaking of things that were loosely mentioned in last week’s newsletter, I’ll end this week’s mail out with a clip from Jon Stewart’s return to The Daily Show, as he does a more light-hearted post-Super Bowl heavy-hearted breakdown of even more things that don’t fill me with much hope for the general direction of where all our interconnected political/societal gong shows are headed (plus it is also nice to see Jon back behind the Daily Show desk).
And that’ll be that from me for this week!
Of course, there’s always more ‘eh?!’ to share than the 4 EHs that came to my mind while putting together this week’s newsletter, so please make sure to follow/frequent 95EH on the Facebook & Instagram & Tumblr (as I share “ehs” on the daily). And for more Jeremy/HI54-specific stuff, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook.
Because, hey… there’s a lot of stuff going on out there, eh?!
And until next week…
Please feel free to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ if you have any questions, comments, ideas and/or schemes — AND — if you think you know anybody else that might enjoy receiving this weekly newsletter about “some locals’ interests” in the highway 95/a area, please feel warmly encouraged to send them a link so they can have a think about signing up too!
And I’ll see you out on the URLs and/or IRLs… whichever comes first 🤘
🍻
