THE WEEKLY EH?! // March 11th, 2024
The latest highlight of FIVE things happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area this week + FOUR other items of some locals' interests from out 'round highway 95, eh.
Hi!
Welcome to the 11/3/24 edition of ‘THE WEEKLY EH?!’ newsletter!
Here’s Five Things
Since The 95EH Events Calendar gets updated with Kimberley AND Cranbrook area events on the regular (and it’s FREE for anybody to get their local events listed, visit moun.town/events for the simple details), I find it helpful to do a weekly HIGHlight of FIVE things happening FOR the current week EVERY Monday, and, well… it’s Monday again, eh:
THING #1: It’s Joni Mitchell appreciation night at Key City Theatre this Tuesday, March 12th (7:30 pm)! Featuring local area songstresses Maddisun, Tenise Marie, and Anie Hepher paying tribute to the Canadian legend — “this event promises to be a night where originality meets legacy, as these artists blend their unique compositions with the iconic work of Joni Mitchell” (although I hear it might already be sold out) 🍁
THING #2: Head over to Ground Floor Coworking Space this Wednesday, March 13th (6 pm - 8 pm) for a YXC Tech Meetup with local area outdoor equipment designer & manufacturer Ghostrider Equipment (a Fernie-based company that manufactures a proprietary bike-mounted 3D printed bear spray holder)! Pre-registration is recommended and you can do so OVER HERE.
THING #3: Thursday night comes with 2 live music options: there’s Manitoba’s Raine Hamilton hitting the Key City Theatre stage in Cranbrook (“Raine is part prairie songstress, part storyweaver; Each song has a story, delivered between songs with humour and grace. Raine invites deep love of the violin into the singer-songwriter genre, writing for violin and voice, as well as for guitar and voice. Joined by cello and upright bass, expect string arrangements that push and pull, that move as they console.”)
And for a different vibe + physical location, local area MCs ShallowWells and Kasstactics hit the Pine Box Stage over at Grist & Mash in Kimberley.
THING #4: It’s St. Patrick’s Day this Sunday (March 17th), and like all traditions centred around drinking, some people like to get started a little early — and getting started the earliest this year is Fire Hall Kitchen & Tap with a Tuesday (March 12th) “Drinkin' Songs! - St. Paddy's Vibes” night of musical bingo (7 pm - 9 pm) 🍻
Next, we have a back-to-back’r from the Marysville Pub with a St. Patrick’s Day karaoke night on Friday (March 15th) followed by a St.Patrick’s Day Jam Night on Saturday (March 16th):
Then we have another back-to-back’r, except from a band this time and not an establishment, with The Spruce Tops providing Celtic tuneage at Grist & Mash on Saturday (March 16th) and then busting out the St. Paddy vibes once again, this time at Stonefire on Sunday (March 17th).
And we’ve now reached the St. Patrick’s Day events happening on the actual day of St. Patrick’s (ie. March 17th), with Encore Brewing Co.’s first Cèilidh (aka: “an Irish/Scottish social gathering featuring live music, wild dancing, good drinks, and great company”) kicking off around 7 pm:
And over at the Kimberley Curling Rink, there’ll be an all-ages punk rock celebration of St. Patrick's Day with Canadian punk rock legend DEAD BOB and local legends the Honeymans (tickets available at Berley Skate until they’re not available… and word on the street is they’ve been going fast)
THING #5: And for those looking for something to do this Sunday that doesn’t involve drinking green beer (or maybe you just want to work off what you’ve been drinking and will be drinking later), there’s a ski & snowboard mountaineering race called ‘North Star SLO - MO’ happening up at this ski hill at 10 am this St. Paddy’s (“Participants will start in Plaza, skin up to top of Boundary, participants will then take their skins off and ski down Dreadnaught to the finish”). More info + registration OVER HERE!
Of course, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week, so don't forget you can punch “moun.town/events” into any browser window at any time and be magically taken away to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR… where you can find the full gamut of Kimberley/Cranbrook area events happening this week & beyond (because there’s always way more going on than I can mention here, with new events added on the regular, especially when people/businesses remember to create Facebook events for their events so I can get things added to the calendar)!
+ Four Ehs
And because there’s always more going on than just the local area events that get added to The 95EH Events Calendar, here are 4 other things that are proving to be top of mind for at least one local area person:
EH #1: I forgot to mention it above, but there is one more thing that will be happening on St. Patrick’s Day this Sunday… I will be aging another year. As for how it feels to have a birthday on one of the drunkest days of the year (just one week after 'the bad’ daylight savings time switch), I’ll just quote my spirit brother Roger Murtaugh…
EH #2: As was mentioned in a previous newsletter, I’ve started packing up my music blogging “job” (read more about that decision here, if interested). One of the driving factors in that decision was seeing the unfair way that artists (especially smaller artists) were continually being treated by streaming companies like Spotify (who recently announced that, in spite of their already market-leading LOW royalty payouts per stream, they would no longer be paying artists with less than 1000 streams a year AT ALL) — which has increasingly made me feel less & less good about giving a company like that $10+ from my pocket every month (as well as promoting their service by attempting to promote/share my curated Spotify playlists). So, today I finally made my break-up with Spotify official and cancelled my paid subscription.
Admittedly, it is going to be a pretty big adjustment to my daily/weekly routine (especially as a recovering music blogger), but I think pulling myself out of that addictive/exploitive distraction stream is going to be the right move in regards to trying to live a life where I practice what I preach more often (hopefully getting to a place one day where it’s all practice and no preaching).
EH #3: Speaking of ‘one day’, there’s an upcoming event called ‘The Future Is Now’ coming to Kimberley in May — it’s a community sustainability, technology & innovation fair with keynote speaker Bob McDonald (host of the radio program Quirks & Quarks) and… apparently tickets are going fast (so you might want to secure one now so you can attend this event in the upcoming future)!
EH #4: And speaking of the future in our community, the Kimberley Nature Park Society is looking for input to help shape the future of our community’s amazing Kimberley Nature Park!
They’re working on a strategic plan and want it to best reflect the needs & values of those who frequent KNP — “whether you’re a hiker, biker, bird watcher, or simply love soaking in the natural beauty, your input matters”! There’s a public survey and a member’s survey, as well as a reminder in the public survey that the annual membership is only $5, so why not take a few minutes right now and pass on your personal input 👍
And that’ll be that from me for this week!
Of course, there’s always more ‘eh?!’ to share than the 4 EHs that came to my mind while putting together this week’s newsletter, so please make sure to follow/frequent 95EH on the Facebook & Instagram & Tumblr (as I share “ehs” on the daily). And for more Jeremy/HI54-specific stuff, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook.
Because, hey… there’s a lot of stuff going on out there, eh?!
And until next week…
Please feel free to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ if you have any questions, comments, ideas and/or schemes — AND — if you think you know anybody else that might enjoy receiving this weekly newsletter about “some locals’ interests” in the highway 95/a area, please feel warmly encouraged to send them a link so they can have a think about signing up too!
And I’ll see you out on the URLs and/or IRLs… whichever comes first 🤘
🍻
