THE WEEKLY EH?! // April 8th, 2024
The latest highlight of FIVE things happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area this week + FOUR other items of some locals' interests from out 'round highway 95, eh.
Hi!
Welcome to the 8/4/24 edition of ‘THE WEEKLY EH?!’ newsletter!
Here’s Five Things
Since The 95EH Events Calendar gets updated with Kimberley AND Cranbrook area events on the regular (although, as mentioned in the last newsletter, I am going to stop updating/running the calendar at the end of this month), I find it helpful to do a weekly HIGHlight of FIVE things happening FOR the current week EVERY Monday, and, well… it’s Monday again, eh (although, me doing these weekly event highlights will likely also end at the end of April when I stop updating/running The 95EH Events Calendar):
THING #1: The Selkirk Secondary School Music Department is performing ‘Mean Girls - The Musical’ on April 10th - 13th at McKim Theatre. Tickets are available at Snowdrift Cafe, Huckleberry Books, and Selkirk Secondary School Office — and word on the street is that the show is going to be very fetch!
THING #2: Daniel Champagne—a “young Australian singer, songwriter and one-of-a-kind guitar virtuoso”—will be hitting the stage at Centre 64 on Thursday, April 11th and you can taste a sample of some of that singer-song’n and guitar-virtuoso’n for yourself on the video below (while checking to see if there’s still tickets available OVER HERE):
THING #3: Kimberley Public Library is hosting a free author talk and slide presentation with Wilma G. Rubens for her book Circling The Edge this Friday, April 12th (3:30 pm to 4:30 pm) — “her compelling memoir will resonate with readers who seek self-discovery and forge past their limitations as they explore the winding path of their life experiences.”
THING #4: Edmonton’s Scenic Route To Alaska will be taking the scenic route to Encore Brewing Co. for an indie rock show on Friday, April 12th (the same day their new album drops, the single for which you can watch below while you check OVER HERE to see if there’s still any tickets available).
THING #5: The Kootenay Freewheelers Cycling Club bike swap is back… and it is happening up at Kimberley Nordic Club this Saturday, April 13th (well, the equipment drop off is April 12th from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm and then THE SWAP is April 13th from 9:00 am to 11:00 am) — “We will have baked goods & coffee by donation starting at 8:00 am on April 13th. We are taking biking clothing, armour, bottles, some parts, full WORKING bikes only, NO helmets!”
Of course, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week, so don't forget you can punch “moun.town/events” into any browser window and be magically taken away to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR — where you can find the full gamut of Kimberley/Cranbrook area events happening this week & beyond (well, at least until the end of April 2024, after which I will no longer be updating/running this free local events calendar, as I believe it’s time for me to start stepping away from whatever I’ve been failing to try and make happen sustainably with all of this 95EH stuff I’ve been publicly messing about with over all these years, eh) 👍
+ Four Ehs
And because there’s always more going on than just the local area events that get added to The 95EH Events Calendar, here are 4 other things that are proving to be top of mind for at least one local area person:
EH #1: There’s a solar eclipse happening today (Monday, April 8th), and, according to College of the Rockies, “a partial solar eclipse will begin at 11:44 AM MDT in Cranbrook and last for approximately two hours” — which means receiving news about this eclipse from my newsletter will likely reach you too late for you to go experience the real thing for yourself (also, we’re only getting a partial eclipse here in BC), so, here’s the live telescope feed of the total solar eclipse from the smart folks over at NASA:
PS - watching the total eclipse footage works best if also listening to Bonnie Tyler’s seminal hit ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart (Turn Around)’ at the same time:
EH #2: This month, Centre 64 starts screening movies on a weekly basis, and you can see the roster of upcoming flicks on the pic below (or jump over to their website for some more information).
EH #3: Personally, I’m most intrigued to see Zone Of Interest on April 18th (an Oscar-buzzed film that uses a WWII scenario to shine an uncomfortable light on something that’s still super relevant to our current society's relationship to ongoing genocides) — check the trailer for a vibe check:
BUT, that’s also because I’ve already seen Fantastic Mr. Fox (April 21st) and Napoleon Dynamite (May 14th) soooooo many times, as they are 2 of my all-time favourites (so I’d recommend them the most to anyone who hasn’t seen them already). And here are trailer links to all the other films coming up at FLIX@64 for anyone looking for a local night out at the cinema (and who don’t want to drive to the mall in Cranbrook): Theatre Camp (April 9th), RU (April 25th), True Grit (April 30th), and Rosie (May 7th).
EH #4: And while we’re talking about flicks that can be screened in the local area (and that have an eerie relevance to our modern times), Alex Garland’s latest film Civil War (one of the films of 2024 that I’m most interested in watching) will be at Landmark Cinema at the Cranbrook Mall on April 12th — here’s the trailer for a taste:
And that’ll be that from me for this week!
Of course, there’s always more ‘eh?!’ to share than the 4 EHs that came to my mind while putting together this week’s newsletter, so please make sure to follow/frequent 95EH on the Facebook & Instagram & Tumblr. And for more Jeremy/HI54-specific stuff, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook (although I haven’t been posting much recently to any of my accounts, as I’ve been feeling the pull to move towards spending less & less time on the ol’ socials lately).
Because, hey… there’s a lot of stuff going on out there, eh?!
And until next week…
Please feel free to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ if you have any questions, comments, ideas and/or schemes — AND — if you think you know anybody else that might enjoy receiving this weekly newsletter about “some locals’ interests” in the highway 95/a area, please feel warmly encouraged to send them a link so they can have a think about signing up too (it’s free to sign-up & receive the newsletter, but there’s a paid version available that offers all the same things of the free version if anybody fancies supporting the work that goes into putting all this stuff together… but also keep in mind that I’m likely shutting this operation down at the end of April 2024)!
And I’ll see you out on the URLs and/or IRLs… whichever comes first 🤘
🍻
