THE WEEKLY EH?! // October 24th, 2023
The latest highlight of FIVE things happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area this week + FOUR other items of some locals' interests (also a FREE email newsletter).
Hi!
Welcome to the 24/10/23 edition of ‘THE WEEKLY EH?!’ newsletter!
Here’s Five Things
Since The 95EH Events Calendar gets updated with Kimberley AND Cranbrook area events on the regular (and it’s FREE for anybody to get their local events listed, just visit moun.town/events for the simple details), I do a weekly HIGHlight of FIVE things happening FOR the current week EVERY Tuesday — AND — it’s Tuesday, again… so:
THING #1: Next Tuesday is October 31st, which means from now until then there is a whole lot of Halloween-y festivities going down all over our interconnected mountowns. So there’s a very good chance that the majority of this newsletter is going to end up feeling a bit haunted (don’t say I didn’t warn you) 👻
For example, did you know that picturesque Fort Steele Heritage Town goes literal ‘ghost town’ with their annual Halloween Spooktacular this Saturday, October 28th (from 4pm to 9pm)? Advance tickets only, and… apparently it’s already more than 75% sold out (so extra spooky for anyone who has a fear of missing out)!
THING #2: And if you’re looking for where the candy is going to be at for yourself via your little ones, this Saturday in Cranbrook the farmers market is going to be a Halloween Market (10am - 1pm) + Cranbrook’s Downtown Business Association is hosting their Downtown Trick or Treating from 11am to 2pm on the 28th as well (“Peruse the downtown core with the family in your best costume to grab treats & swag from the businesses you know and love”)!
And Kimberley’s downtown will be doing their 10th Annual Platzl Trick-or-Treat on Tuesday, October 31st (aka: the literal Halloween) from 3pm - 5pm (and there’s even an interactive map showing all the participating businesses + it’s also worth noting that on the same ‘literally Halloween’ day there is a Haunted Library self-guided tour available to check-out from 3pm-5pm at Kimberley Public Library).
THING #3: Bohemian Spirits is getting doubly into the Halloween spirit/s this week with a ‘DUBnDBR - Ghouls, Grooves & Gimlets’ on Friday night (“A casual evening of deep house and finishing the night off with some liquid drum and bass”) + a ‘Halloween Costume Bash with String Along’ on Saturday night:
THING #4: There’s a ‘Halloween Hootenanny’ going down at Encore this Saturday, which includes live music from Pretty For The People (“This shindig is gonna be a real scream, folks! So, grab your best ghoul or go-go gal and make your way to the Encore Halloween Hootenanny. It's gonna be the most happening haunt in town, Get ready to boot, scoot & boogie!”)
THING #5: I’ve already mentioned more than 5 things and I haven’t even mentioned all the Halloween-y things going on this week, so let’s finish things off with a bonus grab bag of an assortment of other tasty Halloween happenings (because ‘tis the season after all):
• Tuesday, October 24th: Spooky Songs - Musical Bingo at FHK&T (and the Firehall goes halloween-themed at next Tuesday’s musical bingo night on ‘literal Halloween night’ too)
• Wednesday October 25th (and Thursday October, 26th): Haunted Train Tours from Cranbrook History Centre (“Join us as we take you through the Trans Canada Limited at night as you hear 7 ghost stories from our ghoulish conductors involving stories of ghostly encounters onboard the train with beings from folklore”)
• Friday, October 27th: there’s a Halloween Boonanza happening at Kimberley Aquatic Centre (multiple events throughout day/evening), there’s a Kimberley Curling Club Open Bonspiel (runs from Oct 27th-29th), and there’s a Halloween Dance at Royal Canadian Legion Branch #24 (with live music from Band of Brothers)
• Saturday, October 28th: there’s an All Hallows' Eve happening at Marysville Pub & Grill (“themed Drinks, $5 PBR, Prizes for the best costumes and 6 DJs to make the graves shake”), there’s a HALLOWEEN PARTY at The Bull River Inn (7pm - 9pm), there’s a Halloween Party at Charcoal Restaurant that starts at 7pm (“We will have a costume contest, a photo booth, halloween trivia and themed games, with ‘terrorific’ prizes + profits from all ticket sales will go to a local charity organization!!”), there’s a ‘Masked! The Ultimate Halloween Party’ happening at Ella’s in Cranbrook (“DJ Cellie will be spinning the hottest Soca, Dancehall, Reggaeton & Afro-beats.... the dancefloor will be lit so bring your dance posse!”), AND, finally, there’s a Halloween Karaokee Costume Party at Sullys (“no cover”)!
Of course, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week (and, believe it or not, not all those things happening are Halloween-related), so don't forget you can punch -> moun.town/events <- into any browser window at any time and be magically taken away to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR… where you can see all the other Kimberley/Cranbrook events happening this week and beyond 👍
+ Four Ehs
And because there’s always more going on than just the local area events that get added to The 95EH Events Calendar, here’s 4 other things that are proving to be top of mind for at least one local area person:
EH #1: It’s not all Halloween out there this week, and since Colin James (yes, he of ‘Chick n’ Cars and the 3rd world war’ fame) is not only going to be playing Key City Theatre later tonight as the Colin James Blues Trio (ie. “later tonight” = Tuesday October, 24th) — BUT — Colin also metaphorically stopped by the MOUN.TOWN blog last week to do a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Q&A (and I highly recommend you check it out, as, among other things, there’s a great tv series recommendation in there for those who have a Crave subscription or those who know about searching for DVDs via the BC Interlibrary Connect).
EH #2: And in related news, yesterday I attempted to setup my 95EH.CA domain to be connected with this Substack site, as, besides being the service I use to put out this weekly local newsletter (that people can easily sign-up for free and/or choose a paid option to help support the work I do), it is also possible for me to do blog posts on Substack that don’t get emailed out to everyone. In other words: with a little imagination, it’s possible to use a Substack site like a fully functional website/blog (for an example of that, here’s that Colin James Q&A as a blog post that lives on this Substack).
The unexpected challenge I’ve run into since moving the 95EH.CA domain away from the free Tumblr website I had created after pulling the plug on the paid Squarespace website that the ‘95EH idea’ had existed on for its first handful of years is — FOR SOME DUMB REASON — you can only connect the ‘www.95eh.ca’ version of the domain to Substack, which means that if anyone doesn’t put in the ‘www.’ part first, they get taken nowhere 🤦
Apparently, there is a ‘forwarding domain’ trick to get around this seems-like-it-shouldn’t-even-exist issue, but that trick is currently not working for me.
Although, if you’ve ever done domain changes on your own before, you know that changes to domains can sometimes take effect right way or… they can also take up to 24-48 hours to take effect! So I’m just going to cross my fingers that I just need to wait a bit longer than the 16+ hours I’ve already waited before everything goes back to working as it should (ie. when people will be able to type “95eh.ca” and still end up at “www.95eh.ca” because obviously thats how domains are supposed to work) 🤞
EH #3: Since we started with Halloween stuff, how about we end with some Halloween stuff too? Because, even though Kimberley Horror Fest is not happening until next weekend (Saturday, November 4th), the DEADline for submitting your indie horror films is Tuesday, October 31st (ie. literal Halloween). So, if you were thinking of trying to land that $1200 top prize, you best get cracking on your filming & editing & submitting (and you can find a whole bunch of locally creative inspiration over on Kimberley Horror Fest’s ‘Past Films’ page)!
EH #4: And since there’s a certain time of year when listening to spooky-adjacent music hits the best — AND THAT TIME IS RIGHT NOW — it seems only logical to mention my ongoing ‘95 tracks from 95 different artists’ mix cd playlist (with accompanying ‘available on Bandcamp’ archive) called ‘HALLOWEEN’ can be listened to whenever you get the evil urges:
Of course, there’s always more ‘eh?!’ to share than the 4 EHs that came to my mind while putting together this week’s newsletter, so please make sure to follow 95EH on the Facebook & Instagram & this very www.95eh.ca Substack (especially if you ever frequent the highway 95/a area, as I share many things of some locals’ interests on the daily).
And for more Jeremy/HI54-specific stuff, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook.
Because, hey… there’s a lot of stuff going on out there, eh?!
Until next week…
Please feel free to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ if you have any questions, comments, ideas and/or schemes — AND — if you think you know anybody else that might enjoy receiving this weekly newsletter about “some locals’ interests” in the highway 95/a/eh area, please feel warmly encouraged to send them a link so they can have a think about signing up too!
And don’t forget that EVERY Monday, I update YOUR WEEKLY 9(to)5 SHUFFLE with a new human-curated digital mix cd placed on top of this ongoing ‘95 tracks from 95 different artists’ playlist (and I might just get in the habit of posting each week’s featured “shuffle up’d 8” on this Substack as a non-emailed blog post, like this):
And you can find even more ‘diy radio’ stuff like that over on: MOUN.TOWN/FM
+ there’s also MOUN.TOWN/RADIO
+ there’s FM/TV
+ also ETC
🍻
