A bit about this newsletter…
If you are anything like me, at some point in your life, probably multiple times, you have romanticized the idea of “pulling a Christopher McCandless” (aka: burning all your possessions, giving away all your savings, and hitchhiking out to the wilderness to escape modern society — y’know… just say “f*ck it all” and go live off the land for awhile, man).
And, if you are anything like me, you quickly remember that you wouldn’t last a day out in the wild on your own, BECAUSE, not only do you have zero survival skills (thanks a lot Obama!) — BUT—when you actually get right down to it—living out in the wilderness is no joke, even if you’re a bushwhacking weirdo who knows a thing or two about outdoor survival, which I am not (everything I know I’ve learned from episodes of that reality show ‘Alone’).
MOUNTOWN SIGNALS is a Substack newsletter that I send out twice a month (ie. “bi-weekly-ish”). It will be an attempt to import/export different pieces of “some locals’ interests” to/from a mountain town somewhere off of Highway 95/a (eh?!) that (hopefully) anyone anywhere can find some value in.
The mountown signals will usually be getting picked up & sent out from the Kimberley/Cranbrook area of British Columbia, Canada (which would be called Ktunaxa territory in the timeline where "BC" stands for "before colonialism") — BUT — that doesn’t mean that only people who frequent the Kimberley/Cranbrook/Ktunaxa area will be able to enjoy this newsletter! It just means that the newsletter will be flavoured-appropriately by a life attempted to be lived in this specific mountown area — which is still a life flavoured by other things from around the world that can be accessed via an internet connection, no matter where the signal is coming from (things like movies and music and words and etc).
If that sounds like something you might not hate having sent to your email inbox on bi-weekly-ish basis, please feel warmly encouraged to investigate that sign-up button below (if you haven’t already):
Because there’s a version of ongoing “Into The Wild” inspiration and connection that can be achieved on a more sustainable level in this life (ie. not getting rid of all your savings and #spoileralert dying in the bush, BUT, instead, using your savings to help you live more consciously during these late-stage colonial/imperial capitalist times were all in, whilst also participating more intentionally in shaping the world you want to be a part of going forward).
It just requires going “Into The Wild”… from a safe distance :)
Cheers 🍻
