THE WEEKLY EH?! // November 20th, 2023
The latest highlight of FIVE things happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area this week + FOUR other items of some locals' interests (also a FREE email newsletter).
Hi!
Welcome to the 20/11/23 edition of ‘THE WEEKLY EH?!’ newsletter!
Here’s Five Things
Since The 95EH Events Calendar gets updated with Kimberley AND Cranbrook area events on the regular (and it’s FREE for anybody to get their local events listed, just make a public Facebook event or visit moun.town/events for more simple details), I find it helpful to do a weekly HIGHlight of FIVE things happening FOR the current week at the start of EVERY new week (and this week I make the switch to making this an EVERY Monday thing instead of an EVERY Tuesday thing)… so on that note:
THING #1: I graduated high school in rural Alberta in 2001… so, yeah, I remember Finger Eleven. Or, I at least immediately remembered the band name when I saw that they were coming to play in Cranbrook at Key City Theatre this Monday, November 20th — BUT — I had to refresh my memory of which late 90s / early 00s “alternative rock radio” tracks belonged to them (as that genre of “alternative rock radio” that filled Edmonton’s The Bear airwaves back in the day is not something my ears stuck with once the internet came along and I could go program my own radio station, so I’ve kind of got a bunch of bands/songs from that era muddled together in my head, as there was quite a lot of them).
Thankfully, Finger Eleven put out a Greatest Hits record this year, and it didn’t take me too long to separate the puddles from the mudd in my memory (and you can refresh your own memory by pressing play below):
And for those that don’t have Spotify, I’ll leave you with the music video for their track Above (from their 1998 debut Tip), which resonated the most with my nostalgic memories of coming of age in the angsty 90s upon re-listening (but here’s a link to their track One Thing if you want a sample of their softer side while you contemplate the fact that this concert is sold out):
THING #2: Wildsight Kimberley/Cranbrook is putting on a Wild Ideas: Zero-Waste Living talk with Lindsay Sackett of Travelling Top-Ups on Tuesday November 21st at Biscuit in Kimberley AND on Thursday, November 23rd at The Heid Out in Cranbrook:
“Her presentation will have a little bit of something for everyone - whether you are an individual, family, small business, or accommodations business - whether you’re well versed in the ways of zero-waste or entirely new to it! With experience in the waste management consulting industry as well as a passion for the health and wellbeing of the planet, Lindsay has hopes that the zero-waste movement will continue to grow and shift the way we live our daily lives, shaping a more sustainable future for all.” — REGISTER FOR EVENT HERE!
THING #3: There’s a Ski Movie Night Double Feature happening appropriately up at the ski hill (Kimberley Conference Centre) on Friday November 24th:
“That's right, this night just got even better, TWO movie premiers! We are opening with Faction's, Abstract, presented by Black Dog Cycle & Ski, followed by our feature film, Matchstick Productions newest, The Land of Giants” — trailers included below for increased stoke:
And if that wasn’t enough of a double-bill for your Friday entertainment needs, happening at the Stemwinder immediately after the Ski Movie Night Double Feature is an after party with local string pluckers String Along!
THING #4: It’s back up to the ski hill’s conference centre on Saturday, November 25th because… Kimberley Ski Swap is back!
And if one ski-related fundraiser is not enough for you this Saturday, KAR Volunteer Ski Patrol is also having a musical fundraiser/party with Alderbash at the Kimberley Elks Hall at 8pm: “Come join us at the Elks Hall in Kimberley to raise funds for the KAR volunteer ski patrollers with a live performance from Kimberley’s own bush thrashing, powder huffing, guitar slinging, banjo slaying, dobro sliding, bass pumping, drum bashing, dirt bag shredders, Alderbash! Let’s ring in the ski season with a pre season Hullabaloo!”
THING #5: Cranbrook Farmer's Market returns this weekend with their special Winter Market at Western Financial Place this Saturday (12-6pm) AND Sunday (11am-3pm) — “150 talented vendors, featuring all things homegrown, homemade and LOCAL! Start and finish all of your holiday shopping early and enjoy a tasty lunch and fancy beverage while you do it. Bring a donation for the Cranbrook Food Bank, entry is FREE and everyone is welcome!”
And if you missed Santa Claus in Kimberley at last Friday’s Platzl Light-up, you’re in luck because Kris Kringle will be making a return to the local area with JCI Kootenay's 52nd Annual Santa Claus Parade this Saturday, November 25th: “JCI Kootenav's 52nd Annual Cranbrook Santa Claus Parade will be on Saturday November 25th starting at 5:30 p.m. The parade route will begin at Baker Street and 8th Ave South. The floats will travel Baker Street to 12th Ave. South and back up 1st Street South to 8th Ave South”
Of course, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week, so don't forget you can punch “moun.town/events” into any browser window at any time and be magically taken away to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR (I recommend bookmarking that page for easy revisiting) — BECAUSE — over at “moun.town/events” you can see the full gamut of Kimberley/Cranbrook area events happening this week & beyond (because there’s always way more going on than you think, with new events added on the regular)!
+ Four Ehs
And because there’s also always way more going on than just the local area events that get added to The 95EH Events Calendar, here’s 4 other things that are proving to be top of mind for at least one local area person:
EH #1: Since I already mentioned a concert happening this week that is sold out, I figured I might as well also share with you the LOCALLY RECOMMENDED Q&A that local music-maker Maddisun did last week in advance of her show at Key City Theatre last Saturday (which is now also too late for you to get tickets to… but luckily the answers to the 5 important questions asked in the Q&A never expire):
EH #2: Speaking of that ongoing LOCALLY RECOMMENDED Q&A series and how the answers never expire, last week Nelson’s Sarah Orton answered the same 5 questions as Maddisun above (they also played the same show last Saturday, fyi) and in Sarah’s “local area” recommendation she shouted out local meat pie maker Pie & Mighty… who later shouted out being shouted out, as it was their first bit of clippable press clippings:
So now I am shouting out that shoutout because that’s how you get local ‘word of mouth’ to spread both locally & organically (hence the whole existence of this newsletter and 95EH.CA and MOUN.TOWN and etc) — so shoutout local people that take the time to shoutout other local people 🙌
EH #3: On a heavier note, as we live in heavy times, I wanted to share this 11-minute video of Palestine's UN Rep. Nada Abu Tarbush addressing the Israel/Palestine conflict at the 5th Meeting of the High Contracting Parties to the Convention on November 17th, as it is a calmly & articulately delivered response to the inhumane actions we all keep seeing flash across our many screens (in between endless misinformation & misdirection from people in positions of power/influence that one would hope would know/do better) — it’s really worth the watch/listen:
And if you fancy a more argumentative take down of the hypocrisies around what’s going on and how it gets presented to the general public, I found Owen Jones appearance on Piers Morgan to be a worthwhile watch (despite Piers constantly talking over & interrupting Owen with the usual whataboutisms that people like to throw out there to deflect from ever having to address the root of these issues):
EH #4: Because happening on the same societal timeline right now is stuff like Elon Musk (owner of Twitter and a self-proclaimed “free speech” hypocrite), openly declaring that saying a word like “decolonization” is the same as implying “genocide”, and therefore can get one banned (not to mention all the secretive ‘shadow banning’ that already happens on social media when users speak about “controversial” topics surrounding the reality of continuing to live thru colonial/imperial systems of control & oppression):
Add this to the fact that Meta has already stopped allowing Canadians to share “news” stories on Facebook and Instagram, and it all gets more than a bit worrisome to think about where this is all headed (related/unrelated: I went to share this ‘Real Public Investments in British Columbia Can Debunk the “Big Spending” Myth’ Jacobin story on the 95EH Facebook page this weekend, only to find EVERY Jacobin FB link is met with the “This content isn’t available in Canada” warning).
On the bright side, at least this newsletter can get sent directly to the inboxes of those interested in receiving it (but consider this a reminder to subscribe if you haven’t already) AND *knocks on wood* at least I’m still able to share links to this newsletter on Meta for those who are not subscribed — so I will just leave y’all with a handful of tweets that have managed to find their way thru the algorithms to land on my timeline & resonate with me:
And then I will share an overtly dangerous thing that Donald Trump openly said at one of his rallies last week (as he ramps up his run for President again):
Authoritarian rhetoric that he managed to double down on a few days later:
And then I will leave you with this latest AR Moxon essay about “Anger, toward a systemic abuse that refuses to honour the intrinsic immeasurable value carried by every human being, and Rage, the popular hateful instinct that defeats even itself by destroying that humanity” (and, even though the essay uses American examples, it also very much applies to what’s happening up here in ‘Take Back Alberta’ / ‘freedom convoy’ Canada too). It’s also a long read, so I will include a favourite section for those who only have the time / headspace to absorb a couple paragraphs for now:
And that’ll be that for this week.
Of course, there’s always more ‘eh?!’ to share than the 4 EHs that came to my mind while putting together this week’s newsletter, so please make sure to follow/frequent 95EH on the Facebook & Instagram & Tumblr (as I share “ehs” on the daily). And for more Jeremy/HI54-specific stuff, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook.
Because, hey… there’s a lot of stuff going on out there, eh?!
And until next week…
Please feel free to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ if you have any questions, comments, ideas and/or schemes — AND — if you think you know anybody else that might enjoy receiving this weekly newsletter about “some locals’ interests” in the highway 95/a area, please feel warmly encouraged to send them a link so they can have a think about signing up too!
And I’ll see you out on the URLs and/or IRLs… whichever comes first 🤘
🍻
