THE MONTHLY EH?! // May 2024
A highlight of happenings happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area for the month of May — which may just be the final month of EH?!
Hi!
As I mentioned on Monday, I’ve begun the process of shutting down The 95EH Events Calendar (hashtag sad face emoji), which also means I’ll no longer be sending out my weekly newsletter of highlighted Kimberley/Cranbrook events — BUT — since I already had a bunch of local happenings loaded into the calendar from before I officially stopped adding new events to MOUN.TOWN/EVENTS on April 29th, I figured I would put together one last collection of ‘EH?!’ for the entire month of May… and on that note:
Here’s Five Things
THING #1: Call your crafty spooky friend/s, because the Cranbrook Witches Market has returned with a Beltane Market on Friday, May 3rd + Saturday, May 4th — “Beltane is a Pagan holiday, and one of the eight Sabbats. It falls about halfway between the Spring Equinox and the coming Summer Solstice. The holiday celebrates spring at its peak, and the coming summer.” More info + tickets OVER HERE!
THING #2: Speaking of markets, don’t let the recent dip in temperatures and occasional snow symbol in the weather app fool you into thinking it’s still April, because starting in less than 2 weeks the Cranbrook Farmers Market will be making its glorious return to glorious outdoor markets EVERY Saturday (except a special Sunday market on June 16th), and they’ll be kicking things off with a special Mother’s Day Market opening day on May 11th!
THING #3: Speaking of Mother’s Day (which officially falls on Sunday, May 12th this year… FYI anyone out there who has a mother), there are more than a few things happening this month that tie into mums’ special day. For starters, there’s a free entry Mother’s Day Market happening at Centre 64 on May 4th (from 10 am to 3 pm), featuring local entertainment & artisans:
And then the next week in Cranbrook there is a Vendor Market celebrating Mother's Day at Tamarack Centre, featuring entrepreneurs and artisans from all over the Kootenays on Friday, May 10th (1 pm to 6 pm) and Saturday, May 11th (10 am to 6 pm) —AND — there’s another Mother’s Day market happening at the Cranbrook Eagles Hall on that same Friday (4 pm to 8 pm) and Saturday (10 am to 4 pm):
There’s also the 4th annual Mother’s Day tea from Cranbrook History Centre on Sunday, May 12th (which will have four separate times to enjoy High Tea in their Historic Argyle Dining Car) — AND — there’s a Mother’s Day Brunch starting at 10 am over at Heritage Inn Hotel on May 12th as well:
There’s also a Mother’s Day Craft with Corynn at the Kimberley Public Library on Saturday, May 11th (11 am to 12 pm) — AND — a Mother’s Day Kid Karaoke on Sunday, May 12th at Stonefire Pizzeria (4 pm to 7 pm):
And if that all sounds a bit too motherly for you, The Choice Shop in Cranbrook is hosting a Ladies Night on Friday, May 10th — AND — there’s a Mother’s Day Yoga Sound Bath happening at Centre 64 on Sunday, May 12th:
THING #4: Speaking of mothers, have you ever heard of… mother nature? Well, if so, you might be interested in checking out the Cranbrook Wildlife Festival that is happening at Cranbrook History Centre from May 17th to 19th! “Meet a Sloth! Duel with a Dragon!!! Wrangle a Wallaby! Tangle with a Tortoise!” … apparently, there is even an adults-only (19+) show — so jump on over to their website to gather all of the wild details for yourself!
Speaking of festivals, everybody’s favourite celebration of the good kind of human dirtbag is happening Thursday, May 16th at Centre 64 — that’s right, it’s the return of the Dirtbag Festival film night (ps - film submissions are open until May 4th if you happen to be reading this before then and are a bit of a dirtbag procrastinator)!
And in the spirit of preparing for upcoming festivals, there’s a new bocce league starting up in Kimberley (uniquely called ‘Kimberley Bocce League’) and they will be holding a social drop-in on Tuesday, May 7th at the lawn bowling greens up in Townsite for anyone who wants to start preparing for the bocce tournaments happening in Kimberley at JulyFest and/or in Cranbrook during Spirit of the Rockies.
THING #5: And while we’re on the topic of community athletics, the 9th annual Kootenay Fun 5 will be happening on Saturday, May 4th…
And if you missed the registration cut-off for that event but still want to do a physical activity outside with a bunch of other people, the 3rd annual Cranbrook Gravel Grind (CGG) will be taking place on May 24th + 25th (“Welcoming any and all riders, the 65 and 112 kilometre routes will showcase the Cranbrook Community Forest, Chief Isadore Trail Network, Trans Canada Trail, and Mount Baker Forestry Service Roads. The race starts and finishes in Idlewild Park.”)!
Of course, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week month, so don't forget you can still punch “moun.town/events” into any browser window for the next little while and still be magically taken away to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR… where you can find the remaining gamut of Kimberley/Cranbrook area events happening this week month & beyond, all in one place (well, at least those events that I got added to the calendar before pulling the plug on my independent community calendar updating at the end of April 2024). And, going forward, in regards to staying abreast of local area events, you can always check out the calendars at Tourism Kimberley or Cranbrook Tourism (or Key City Theatre, or Centre 64, or KPL, or CPL, or FB, or… ETC).
+ Four More Ehs
And because there’s more going on than just the local area events that I managed to cram in above, here are 4 other things that might catch your fancy this May, eh:
EH #1: The Friends of the Cranbrook Public Library are having a Spring Book Sale on Friday, May 3rd + Saturday, May 4th… which means you can “Stock up on great reads, movies, and puzzles — many different genres and types of materials will be available to suit every mood and taste!”
EH #2: The Kootenay Palestine Solidarity Collective is hosting a screening of the documentary WALL — “Preeminent UK playwright and screenwriter David Hare writes and stars in this innovative animated feature that explores the reality of the wall separating Israel and Palestine as no film has before. Rich with rhythmic, raw imagery, the film is framed by Hare’s journey, as both his heart and mind are shaken by the incongruities and contradictions of life in the shadow of the wall.” Entry is by donation and all proceeds will be donated to Islamic Relief Canada.
EH #3: Kimberley’s resident rock n’ rollers Leather Apron Revival return to the Elks Hall on Friday, May 10th for “a wild night of rock 'n' roll and good times” — get your tickets HERE before they’re all gone:
And if LAR doesn’t quench your monthly thirst for both the rocking and the rolling, BC/DC will be passing through to shake people all night long over at Encore Brewing on Friday, May 24th — “For over 20 years, Canada’s favourite rock n' roll salute, BC/DC, has systematically redefined the concept of a tribute band; garnering iconic status amongst diehard fans, agents, and venues from coast to coast and far beyond” — check for tickets HERE 🤘
EH #4: And to both continue and end on a musical note, Kimberley Riverside Campground is putting on a day of food, music, and fun for a great cause (ie. “all proceeds go towards building a new disc golf course for everyone to enjoy”) on Saturday, May 11th — local brews from Overtime start at 1 pm, local music from Velvet Vixen starts at 3 pm and delicious food starts at 5 pm.
And I wasn’t able to get Grist & Mash’s lineup of live music added to the calendar before I stopped updating things, but you can now check out their full month of musical guests over on their Facebook event page (which includes upcoming shows from Darin Welch, Jon Burden, The D’Linquint, The Hurricanes, Two Crows For Comfort, and Dave Prinn).
And that’ll be that from me for not only this week and not only this month—BUT—possibly/probably, that’ll be that from me for the whole dang kit and caboodle (or at least for the indefinite future).
Of course, I’ve been known to stop and start things up again in the past (it’s kinda the only way I know how to run a blahg), so please feel free to follow/frequent 95EH on Facebook & Instagram & Tumblr to see if I ever make a return to posting things publicly to the void that is social media again (and to keep tabs on whether I start posting any Jeremy/HI54-specific stuff again, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook).
Because, hey… there’s a lot of stuff going on out there, eh?!
And until we tweet again…
Please feel free to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ or ‘jeremy@hi54lofi.com’ if you have any questions, comments, ideas and/or schemes — AND — I’d also like to say thanks to anyone who has said thanks and/or shown any appreciation for any of this dumb internetting stuff I’ve messed about with over the years (it’s much appreciated and I wish there was a way to somehow convert it into something my landlord would accept as a rent payment) 🙃
And I guess I’ll see you out on the URLs or IRLs… whichever comes first 🤘
🍻
