THE WEEKLY EH?! // October 17th, 2023
This week's highlight of FIVE things happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area + FOUR other items of some locals' interests.
Hi!
Welcome to the 17/10/23 edition of ‘THE WEEKLY EH?!’ newsletter!
Here’s Five Things
Since The 95EH Events Calendar gets updated with Kimberley AND Cranbrook area events on the regular (and it’s FREE for anybody to get their local events listed, just visit moun.town/events for the simple details), I like to do a weekly HIGHlight of FIVE things happening FOR the current week every Tuesday… and it’s Tuesday again:
THING #1: Local music-maker Heather Gemmell is hosting a kids sing along outside of the recently opened Summit Snacks (on the Platzl, across from Spirit Rock Climbing Center) from 5:15pm to 6pm on Wednesday, October 18th. “Some good pals of mine have just launched ‘Summit Snacks’ and are looking to sell some more ice cream before the weather turns (soups and hot snacks to come this winter). I also just got a load of 100 beginner harmonica's too… if any of you or your kids are interested in getting started with the ‘mouth harp’. Hope to see you there!” — more info on their FB post.
THING #2: Cranbrook Community Theatre opens its milestone 50/60th anniversary season with Don’t Dress For Dinner on October 19th at the Studio Stage Door. “This season opener is jam packed with laughs, mayhem, mistresses, and surprises. Directed by Patrick Baranowski, Don’t Dress for Dinner is a classic farce that hurtles along at a breakneck speed, weaving a web of intrigue, marital treachery and dishing up laugh after laugh.” This show runs Oct 19th-22nd, Oct 25th-28th, and Nov 2nd-3rd… get your tickets here!
THING #3: The Kimberley Alpine Resort Job Fair is happening on Saturday, October 21st (from 11am-3pm at the Stemwinder Bar and Grill). “Positions: Food & Beverage, Guest Services, Outdoor Operations (Lift operators, ticket checkers, parking, snow shoveling, etc.), Rentals, Retail, Guest Services, Housekeeping, and more.. if you’re unable to attend the KAR Job Fair, please send your resume with the 2 positions you are interested in to: employment@skikimberley.com” — jump over to their FB event for more info!
And while your thoughts are up at the ski hill, it’s worth nothing that later this very same Saturday the 21st of October, from 6pm to 5-minutes-from-midnight, there is a Mom’s Night Out happening at the Kimberley Conference Centre (“Vender Night Market. With Door Prizes, Games, Dancing and Snacks. Not Just for Moms, just any Lady that needs a night out. Tickets are $10 and available at Bears Pie Factory in Kimberley and the Spiral Path in Cranbrook. Limited Tickets at the Door.”).
Related thought: these two events happening on the same day, at the same ski hill, kinda sounds like a plot setup for one of those 80s ski comedy films, eh?
THING #4: Speaking of comedy, (*excellent segue alert*) the Camp Kootenay Comedy Tour is coming back thru our neck of the woods… “and this time, it's Ladies' Night”! Cranbrook’s own Sarah Stupar has enlisted Robyn Sansom and Gabby Rose from Alberta to come take live comedy back to the Kimberley Elks on Saturday October 21st (the same night as Mom’s Night Out… the potential ski comedy plot thickens) — so get your tickets here (or see if there’s any left at the door)!
THING #5: Leeroy Stagger is not only coming to play a show in Kimberley at Centre 64 this Saturday, October 21st (more info / check for tickets here):
But Leeroy Stagger is also playing a show in Cranbrook at Encore Brewing (and bowling alley) on Tuesday, October 24th (check their FB event for more details):
So while you try to decide which day & which mountown you’d like to see Leeroy Stagger live, why not press play on something Leeroy put out back in 2021 (and if you like what you hear, go do some further exploring on Bandcamp / Spotify / or wherever else you’re listening to music these days) 👇
Of course, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week, so don't forget you can punch -> moun.town/events <- into any browser window at any time and be magically taken away to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR… where you can see all the other Kimberley/Cranbrook events happening this week and beyond 👍
+ Four Ehs
And because there’s always more going on than just the local area events that get added to The 95EH Events Calendar, here’s 4 other things that are proving to be top of mind for at least one local area person:
EH #1: In case you didn’t think that this week already had enough going on, apparently it is also ‘National Waste Reduction Week’ (which I learned from this informative RDEK social post, which also links to this informative ‘Textiles Tuesday’ article from Circular Economy Month)…
AND it is also ‘Small Business Week’ — which I found out about through the Kimberley Chamber’s informative newsletter + this ‘Small Business Week - Chamber Challenge’ they posted on their Facebook page (which you can also read more about over on the Chamber’s recently refurbished website AND blog, where you can also find details for how to participate without using Facebook):
And on a related note, it seems worth mentioning again that October is Canadian Library Month and you can get exclusive deals/discounts at participating local small businesses by showing your Kimberley Public Library card ALL 👏 MONTH 👏 LONG 👏 (which is something you can also read more about on the Chamber’s new website/blog).
EH #2: While we’re on the topic of locals attempting to engage locals in openly speaking positively about other locals, shout-out to Start In Cranbrook for trying to rile up some positivity on the local socials (sometimes pronounced “loco socials”) recently with their ‘Social Media Positivity Challenges’ on Facebook (which is a nice response to the often more commonly seen ‘Social Media Negativity Unchallenged’) 🙌
EH #3: If you’re looking for a great essay to read on the Israel/Palestine situation—one that might heavily resonate with that part of your humanity getting overwhelmed by these horrible (yet sadly familiar) atrocities layered in messy (yet sadly familiar) realities that can make a North American feel both hopelessly powerless and ignorantly complacent—I think this ‘Hurting The Right People’ essay by the dependably insightful
is the essay you’re heart/mind/soul is looking for:His whole ‘The Reframe’ Substack is something I highly recommend exploring further / subscribing to (especially if you resonated with the above article), and his 15-part essay series called Sabotage (“on the progressive generative process of repair, the regressive unsustainable process that sabotages repair, the accommodation of blameless supremacy that makes sabotage inevitable, and the tools we can all use to fight it”) is really worth making some time for.
EH #4: Let’s end on a light musical note, eh? Not just because it’s a nice escape from the heaviness in the world right now, but also because I told Ralph up at the KEGG.CA community garden that I would send him an email with some Todd Snider links to check out (because he was telling me about how Arlo Guthrie was a performer with great stage banter, because an Arlo Guthrie song was playing in my pocket while I turned compost last Saturday, and, of course, whenever someone mentions ‘great stage banter’, I always have to say, “have you heard of Todd Snider?”) — SO — now I get to kill ‘2 birds with 1 stone’ by turning my promised email to Ralph into my final EH for the week (and I also get to test if Ralph reads this newsletter).
So, first things first, if you’ve never experienced Todd Snider before, whether you’re a Ralph or not, your best option for getting immediately won over by his folksy song-writing brilliance + stand-up comedian level stage banter is pressing play on his 2003 live album ‘Near Truths and Hotel Rooms’ — AND IF YOU ONLY HAD TIME FOR ONE TRACK TO DECIDE — you need to press play on ‘The Story of the Ballad of the Devil's Backbone Tavern’ (which transitions smoothly into ‘The Ballad of the Devil's Backbone Tavern’):
And if listening to that stage banter puts the kind of smile on your face like it always does to me, congratulations, you might just be a Todd Snider fan now — which is good news for you, because Todd has a whole bunch of stuff that’ll keep you smiling like that. For example, that whole ‘near truths’ live album is full of ear-grinning moments like above (and he’s got other great live albums that can be found on the streamers) + Todd has so many wonderful live recordings that can be found whilst rabbit-holeing on Youtube. It’s hard for me to pick a favourite, so I’ll just go with this Garth Brooks related story for an example of the mischievous story-telling brilliance on offer:
And it’s not just Todd’s live performances that capture his charm & wit, he’s got a very large & great back catalogue of studio albums to go explore — but I’d recommend starting off with his 2004 album ‘East Nashville Skyline’, which I think is his best start-to-finish studio album (which is also the first album of his I ever heard/bought, after randomly hearing ‘The Ballad of the Kingsmen’ on late-night UK radio while crammed in a work van from Hull to Nottingham):
And then I would say that probably my all-time favourite song of his is ‘Money, Compliments, Publicity (Song Number Ten)’ off of his 2009 album ‘The Excitement Plan’ — as it has one of the best punch line deliveries in a song EVER (fyi… it’s the line about ‘taking care of his friends’):
In closing, to Ralph and whoever else might still be reading, if you ever get a chance to see Todd Snider perform live, you should take that chance (and here’s one more fave example from Youtube, as Todd’s digital performances are worth taking a chance on too, especially if you’re a fan of top shelf live banter without having to leave the house):
Of course, there’s always more ‘eh?!’ to share than the 4 EHs that came to my mind while putting together this week’s newsletter, so please make sure to follow 95EH on the Facebook & Instagram & Tumblr (especially if you ever frequent the highway 95/a area, as I share many things of some locals’ interests on the daily).
And for more Jeremy/HI54-specific stuff, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook.
Because, hey… there’s a lot of stuff going on out there, eh?!
Until next week…
Please feel free to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ if you have any questions, comments, ideas and/or schemes — AND — if you think you know anybody else that might enjoy receiving this weekly newsletter about “some locals’ interests” in the highway 95/a/eh area, please feel warmly encouraged to send them a link so they can have a think about signing up too!
And don’t forget that EVERY Monday, I update YOUR WEEKLY 9(to)5 SHUFFLE with a new human-curated digital mix cd placed on top of this ongoing ‘95 tracks from 95 different artists’ playlist:
And you can find even more ‘diy radio’ stuff like that over on: MOUN.TOWN/FM
