THE WEEKLY EH?! // August 1st, 2023
This week's highlight of FIVE things happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area + FOUR other items of some locals' interests.
Hi!
My name is Jeremy and I am the guy that messes about with The 95EH Events Calendar (I also mess about with most of the stuff on 95EH.CA and HI54.BLOG) and THIS is the first attempt at me doing an email newsletter edition of ‘The Weekly Eh?!’ — which is a long-running series that I’ve been doing to highlight some of what’s going on in the Kimberley & Cranbrook area each week.
I expect this email newsletter will go thru a few iterations before it finds a consistent groove (also it’s my first time using Substack) — BUT — I think the general format that I’d like to follow is where I give a short introduction in the opening “Hi!” section (kinda like I’m doing right now), and then…
Five Things
In this next section, because The 95EH Events Calendar is always being updated with local Kimberley / Cranbrook area events EVERY week (and it’s FREE for anybody to get their local area events listed), I think it makes sense to start sharing my weekly HIGHlight of FIVE things FOR the current week as something that can be sent directly to an email inbox (especially with the way social media sites are always changing how they work and who gets shown what) — so, on that note:
THING #1: The circus is coming to town! More specifically, it’s The Great Benjamins Circus coming to the Kimberley Civic Centre on August 3rd (3:30pm - 8:00pm). Personally, I haven’t been keeping up on who’s who in the circus scene these days, so you’ll have to check out The Great Benjamins Circus on Facebook and/or over on their website for yourself if you want to suss out whether this might be the kind of live experience your Thursday could use (but I will just add that I often like movies that have plots that involve characters who have worked for travelling circuses, for whatever that’s worth in your considerations).
THING #2: Speaking of Thursdays, that’s the day that Summer Sounds is now happening down at Rotary Park in Cranbrook (5:30pm - 10pm, put on by Fisher Peak Performing Artists)! This week features Amy Nelson and Marshall Dylan (formerly known as "The Cleland Family Band"). The live music starts at 6:45pm, but Keon Chung starts DJ'ing at 5:30pm + Fisher Peak Brewing will have their beer garden going on.
THING #3: Grist & Mash continues their summer bbq series with another First Friday BBQ on August 4th! Here’s the menu as described by the mashers of grist: "Classic BBQ Plate, Featuring: 1/2 Rack Local Baby Back Ribs from Rick's Meats, slow-cooked in our housemade Lowenrider Amber Lager BBQ sauce, served with farmers market coleslaw and potato salad” — aka: yum!
THING #4: Didn’t get tickets to the 30th Annual Kaslo Jazz Etc Fest — or at least not tickets for Saturday, August 5th? Or maybe you just like jazz and/or live music in general? Well, in that case, you might want to check out Kimberley’s Take Four at Jazz Night this Saturday up at Centre 64 (an event that is both a part of Kaleidoscope Festival and First Saturdays, if you’re looking for even more things to check out this week).
THING #5: Here’s your frequent friendly reminder that the Kimberley Farmers’ Market runs EVERY Thursday from 5pm - 7:30pm, ALL SUMMER LONG, over on Howard Street (beside the Platzl) — AND — the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market runs EVERY Saturday from 10am - 1pm, ALL SUMMER LONG, over at 10th Avenue S (beside Rotary Park).
But, as I’m sure you know, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week, so don't forget that you can always punch -> moun.town/events <- into any browser window at any time and be magically taken to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR to see all the other events happening this week and beyond + you can also follow 95EH on the Facebook for the sharing of even more things happening locally via daily #TheDailyEh?! posts & more + over on Instagram there be a bunch of Ehs getting shared on the regular in the Insta Stories of @95EHdotCA + I’m hoping to eventually get to a ‘2 ehs a day’ posting schedule over on the 95EH.CA tumblr (and you can always reach out via email to 'hey@95eh.ca' if you have something of local area interest/intrigue that you think would be a good fit for a HWY 95EH signal boost) 👍
Four Ehs
And because sometimes there’s more going on than just the local events that get added to The 95EH Events Calendar, this next section is a place for me to share 4 other things that are top of mind for at least one local area person (ie. myself):
Eh #1: Not sure if you heard the news or not, but that hot-button ‘Marysville McDonalds’ proposal (y’know, the one where a proponent was asking the city to change zoning from industrial to commercial because they wanted to put in a McDonalds + Gas Station + Car Wash… remember? we talked about it quite a bit) — WELL — after a very engaged community push back from all kinds of angles & perspectives, the polarizing proposal got shut down at council by a vote of 4 to 3 last Monday (July 24th)! I feel like I might have a longer blog post in me on this topic, so, for now, I’ll just add that I shared some thoughts on the 95EH Instagram the day after the vote happened + I also recommend everybody try to watch the portion of last Monday’s council meeting on Youtube where this proposal was discussed (starts around the 1:43 mark and goes for about 75 minutes). Now, I’m probably biased, but I must say that the way things eventually played out felt like a very satisfying civic conclusion to what turned out to be an interesting few months of community discourse, both online and in-person, with conversations that hit upon a lot of interconnected challenges that we need to start better facing individually & collectively. Dare I say I felt a pinch hopeful?
Eh #2: Speaking of community discourse… did you know that the 95EH Facebook page got banned from The Kimberley Connection Facebook group?! That’s right, the Facebook group that was started up because some people felt the other local Facebook group (ie. the Corkboard) was over-moderated and lacked freedom of speech, so they started another local Facebook group — well, 95EH got banned from that group! And all for just sharing a post in the group about how people should get their comments into city council about the ‘Marysville McDonalds’ before the public hearing deadlines (how controversial!). Ok, sure… maybe I replied with some cheeky comments to one person who kept trying to get me to argue with all the straw men they brought to the table (quickly jumping to calling me a boogeyman word like “socialist” for saying companies that make billions in profits every year should be paying their employees a living wage) — BUT IT’S OKAY — I really just wish I would have screenshot the extent of what was said in the exchanges before the post was deleted, as there were some amusing back-and-forths + I really didn’t say anything ban worthy (especially from the freedom of speech group… but it’s always ‘selective freedoms’, isn’t it?). On the bright side, I guess I can now start saying things like “95EH is banned on Facebook” to start giving 95EH a bit more edge out on the streets & URLs :)
Eh #3: Actually, while we’re still on the topic of online community discourse… I would just like to get it out there that, despite what someone said in the Facebook comments section of a post that had nothing to do with 95EH, I have not launched a food truck business. So please know that my reasons for “stirring the pot” about the ‘Marysville McDonalds’ proposal had nothing to do with ulterior motives of me having secret food truck ambitions. The Hungry Eh food truck has nothing to do with 95EH, and vice versa. We just both have “eh” in our names (which, apparently, is enough corroborating evidence to launch a rumour). Unfortunately, for this piece of juicy moutown gossip, it was just… Eh Case of Mistaken Eh-dentity 🙃
Eh #4: I’m forever in the process of trying to figure out what exactly my process is for 95EH.CA (and its socials) + HI54.BLOG (and its socials) + also MOUN.TOWN (which is kinda like where HI54 & 95EH overlap in the Venn diagram in my head), but if anybody reading this newsletter is interested in maybe getting involved or collaborating in any ways (or knows of someone who might be interested), please feel warmly encouraged to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ and I will get back to you with some sort of reply. Because, even though I don’t fully know what I’m doing or how to best go about it (and I’m only one person), August is shaping up to be a good month for me being focused on trying to better figure out how to communicate what I do / what I would like to try doing with these projects going forward (and I’m hoping that me officially starting to experiment with the ‘mutually beneficial employment’ idea with some local businesses/organizations is going to be a good catalyst for working out that work). So please get in touch if you have any questions or comments or thinking-out-loud ideas — as ‘tis the season for me to be in that headspace!
Of course, there’s always more ‘eh?!’ to share than the 4 Ehs that came to my mind while putting together this week’s newsletter, so please make sure to follow 95EH on the Facebook & Instagram, especially if you frequent the Kimberley/Cranbrook area, and for more Jeremy-specific stuff, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook — because there’s a lot going on out there, eh?!
And until next week…
That is more or less how a ‘The Weekly Eh?!’ newsletter is going to be.
And the plan is for me to put one together EVERY Tuesday (and if that proves to be too frequent of a workload, maybe every other Tuesday).
Hopefully you liked this first one enough to want to receive another one.
And if you liked this newsletter enough to want to pass it on to someone else who you think might also get some value out of having it arrive in their inbox, all the more good karma to you for passing things along ✌️
Cheers,
Jeremy / HI54LOFI
