THE WEEKLY EH?! // August 15th, 2023
This week's highlight of FIVE things happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area + FOUR other items of some locals' interests.
Hi!
Welcome to the 3rd edition of THE WEEKLY EH?! newsletter!
But enough with the small talk…
Here’s Five Things
Since The 95EH Events Calendar is being updated with Kimberley AND Cranbrook area events on the regular (and it’s FREE for anybody to get their local area events listed in this calendar, all anyone has to do is create a public Facebook event OR hit the ‘Submit Event’ button over on moun.town/events), and since mountain town people often like to keep their options open by not committing too early for events too far in the future, I like to do a weekly HIGHlight of FIVE things happening FOR the current week that we’re currently in, every Tuesday — as sometimes it’s best to just take life one week at a time:
• THING #1: The Kimberley Kaleidoscope Art Festival is happening from August 16th -20th (including an open, juried, art exhibition that is running at Centre 64 from July 27th - August 23rd). This celebration of the arts is spread out with live music, workshops, a kids festival and MORE — so check Centre 64’s Facebook event page for all the individual event details!
• THING #2: Grist & Mash has two nights of live music this week! Thursday, August 17th will see locals String Along stringing along some tunes from 6:30pm - 9:30pm — AND THEN — on Friday, August 18th Canmore’s Seth Anderson will be hitting the Pine Box Stage. I couldn’t find any online listening (or existence) for String Along to link out to (yet?), so you’ll have to pop on down to the brewery Thursday night to hear for yourself — BUT — Seth Anderson does have some music up on the internets (including wherever you stream music), so here’s his album on artist-friendly Bandcamp if you fancy doing any pre-concert audio research:
• THING #3: It’s summer music festival season anywhere in the world where summer is happening, including here in the Kootenays (where another week of 30+ weather in the forecast definitely confirms that it is still very much ‘that part’ of the modern summer). And after making TWO festival-lineup playlist samplers for last week’s THE WEEKLY EH?!, I am back again to say that, about a 50 minute drive away from 95EH’s Highway 95a Headquarters, there is a music festival going on in the village of Canal Flats on August 18th + 19th called Flats Fest — AND — I put together a Spotify playlist featuring all of the artists playing the main stage (+ one of the artists playing the Kootenay stage) for anyone wanting to digitally sample some of Flat Fest’s 2023 sound (I couldn’t find most of the Kootenay stage artists on Spotify, so check out the full line-up details OVER HERE):
THING #4: If you checked out that Flats Fest line-up playlist, you probably picked up on a strong ‘country music’ vibe — tbh it kinda seems like headliners Trooper got confused and meant to book Rock The Kootenays the previous weekend 🙃 — so it only makes sense to carry on with the country vibes and mention that the Cranbrook Pro Rodeo is happening August 18th - 20th at Wycliffe Exhibition Grounds. Tickets available at Top Crop!
THING #5: It’s Roller-Oke #2 night at Cranbrook Curling Rink this Friday (August 18th, 5pm - 10pm). And, yes, as you probably worked out — this ‘Roller-oke’ event is a combination of roller skating AND karaoke (hosted by JaxAudio).
Of course, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week, including this week, so don't forget you can always punch -> moun.town/events <- into any browser window at any time and be magically taken to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR to see all the other events happening this week and beyond + you can also follow 95EH on the Facebook for the sharing of EVEN MORE THINGS happening locally + over on Instagram there be a bunch of Ehs getting shared on the regular in the Insta Stories of @95EHdotCA + I’m hoping to get up to a ‘Two Ehs A Day’ posting schedule over on the 95EH.CA Tumblr (and you can always reach out via email to 'hey@95eh.ca' if you have something of local area interest/intrigue that you think would be a good fit for a HWY 95EH signal boost & we can chat about the ways in which I might be able to help with that) 👍
+ Four Ehs
And because there’s always more going on than just the local area events that get added to The 95EH Events Calendar, here’s 4 other things that are proving to be top of mind for at least one local area person (ie. myself):
EH #1: One of the interesting things about keeping a blog going for more years than makes any financial/logical sense is that, every now and again, an artist or band that I was a fan of long before past-me even knew what a blog was, takes part in a Q&A series on present-me’s blog. Recent example: I was a fan of Canadian indie-rock legends Odds since back in the 90s (I guess you could say I’ve always been… “someone who’s cool”) — AND — last week I got the mildly surreal experience of having the Odds take part in my HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Q&A series! You can read their answers to my usual 5 HR questions OVER HERE, and you can check out the Odds’ new album here, and if you didn’t get my “someone who’s cool” reference earlier, you can jump back to 1996 with this classic Odds music video for my fave track of theirs:
EH #2: Related to my recurring HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Q&A series, I’m thinking of bringing back more of these ‘Q&A as PR’ ideas to the non-“music blog” stuff that I do. For example, when I first started 95EH.CA in the pre-pandemic days (back when it was a Squarespace website that cost me a monthly stipend), I started off with doing a Q&A series called ‘Meet A Local’ and then ‘Meet A Local Business’ (I can’t currently link to any examples because 95EH.CA is now a free Tumblr site, so a lot of 95EH’s past Squarespace content is lost to time… or sitting in a draft folder waiting for me to reformat it for MOUN.TOWN purposes). More recently, I started trying out a localized version of my HIGHLY RECOMMENDED series called LOCALLY RECOMMENDED (which was the same 5 question format as HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, except I swapped out one of the question topics to be about local area recommendations instead). ANYWAYS… if you or anyone you know in the local area might be interested in doing a LOCALLY RECOMMENDED Q&A, or just interested in finding out more about the broader idea here, please shoot an email to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ and I will get back to you with more details!
EH #3: Speaking of “send an email to: hey@95eh.ca” — if you’re also interested in participating in similar ‘local content creation’ via doing things on the internet with the online platforms/tools we all have access to (or if you’re already doing stuff like that that in your own orbit and would be interested in exploring ways to get the word out to other solar systems), please do get in touch via email or dm me on social media or hi me irl! I like to joke that I am “forever trying to figure out what I’m doing” with my own stuff (namely: HI54.BLOG + 95EH.CA + all their interconnected parts + life also), BUT, I actually do have a good idea about what kind of things I’d like to more intently use my platforms to help signal boost in our connected communities (in a nutshell: I’d like to share/support more of the subjective good things happening in our collective lives while also pushing back on more of the objective bad things that continue to happen, however that looks / plays out going forward) + I have a bunch of ideas on the different ways in which to try to signal boost “some locals’ interests” thru our interconnected online communities (ie. some ideas may work best as social media posts, some as long formatted blog posts, some as quick micro-blogs, some in a newsletter & some in et cetera). The more we’re able to play around with things, the more working examples there will be to better show others how they can get involved and/or do similar (although there’s already lots of clues left all over the place if you click around thru the past & present). So, in the meantime… please try to remember to think “hey@95eh.ca” whenever / if ever you find yourself thinking about something that would maybe make sense for sharing somehow in the HI54/95EH universe (otherwise I just go with what I come across when left to my own devices) 👍
EH #4: And for an interconnected example of how ‘good things’ can be shared to further encourage more good things happening — and I like to think the ‘Marysville McDonalds’ situation was an example of how pushing back on bad things can help discourage bad things from happening more, but maybe I’m biased on that outcome ;) — here’s an example of how an act of reciprocating neighbourly kindness can trickle in-between the online & in-person worlds: Nola brings Top Crop Too some veggies from the KEGG.CA community garden, Top Crop Too takes a picture and shouts the act of neighbourly niceness out on their socials (including extra context of more neighbourly niceness) — AND THEN — I shared Top Crop Too’s Instagram post in 95EH’s Instagram story (and it was also shared in KEGG’s Instagram story) + I also shared Top Crop Too’s Facebook post on 95EH’s Facebook page (and in the KEGG Facebook group). And now I’m also sharing it in this newsletter! Good social deed 🤝good social reach (*results may vary). You see… social media & the internet doesn’t have to be all bad news & distractions — we can also use it for spreading more of the good things that are going on & around the local areas that we’re all trying to live in together!
Of course, there’s always more ‘eh?!’ to share than the 4 Ehs that came to my mind while putting together this week’s newsletter, so please make sure to follow 95EH on the Facebook & Instagram & Tumblr, especially if you frequent the highway 95/a/eh area where these signals are getting relayed from.
And for more Jeremy/HI54-specific stuff, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook (and since I’m just one person, be warned that there’s sometimes cross-over and self-collaboration between all my HI54+95EH social media accounts as I attempt to manage them all while also trying to think of ways to use social media less and/or more efficiently/intently).
Because, hey… there’s a lot of stuff going on out there, eh?!
Until next week…
Please feel free to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ if you have any questions, comments, ideas and/or schemes — and if you think you know anybody else that might enjoy receiving this weekly newsletter about “some locals’ interests” in the highway 95/a/eh area, please feel warmly encouraged to send them a link so they can have a think about signing up too!
